– In Mexico City, the year-old bike sharing system ECOBICI is at capacity with a waiting list for memberships, and is said to have contributed to a 50% jump in ridership of privately owned bikes.
– Jakarta, Indonesia gets its first bike lane, and 5,000 people show up to ride it.
– In the U.S. a spate of new state laws require people to drive more safely around bicycles.

The Stakeholder Advisory Committee for PBOT’s Lloyd District Bikeway Development projects has reached a decision on how to improve North Vancouver/Wheeler Avenues between Broadway and the Rose Quarter.
This project — which includes what we’ve referred to in the past as the “Vancouver Gap” — is one of three the committee is working on (the others, the 12th Avenue overcrossing and a bikeway on NE Holladay are still being hashed out). The committee made their official technical recommendation to the Portland Bureau of Transportation on May 19th.
“When we went back to figure out how the League got their low numbers, we discovered that they use a definition that is very narrow and doesn’t capture all funding.”

Oregon’s 8th place “Bike Friendly State” ranking by the League of American Bicyclists raised a lot of eyebrows around here. Oregon isn’t perfect; but 8th place? Behind Florida?!
In our coverage earlier this week we explored a few reasons these state rankings should be taken with a grain of salt (for instance, they don’t account for major things like our state-run Scenic Bikeways Program). And now, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) says the numbers used by the League gives even more reason to question the validity of the rankings.
What happens when you combine a City that prioritizes neighborhood bikeways, parents that are passionate about biking to school, and school administrators that not only encourage — but participate in it?
You get a bike train that stretches four blocks long and numbers about 150 people. That’s what happened at Beach School this morning. Check out the amazing video below (taken by Beach parent Suzanne Clarke):

Description: I am fairly sure this is at least close to the right model. It is a Schwinn hybrid commuter bike, aluminum frame, w/ linear pull brakes, quick-release seat and wheels. No rack, a light was attached to the front, and the kickstand comes down but doesn’t support the weight of the bike.
