Weekend Event Guide
This year, bike event season seems to only have sped up as the weather has gotten cooler. Tonight’s grand opening of the Artcrank poster show marks the beginning of six weeks of Oregon Manifest. The Manifest’s flagship events are also this weekend, in which 30 framebuilders are competing for judges’ approval and in a 77 mile race. The infamous Cross Crusade series opens on Sunday. As if that isn’t enough, there’s also a full lineup including a bike move, social rides, a wonky talk, and a movie.
Safe passing in the spotlight in second “Bikes Riding with Bikes” PSA
A few weeks ago we wrote about a series of educational videos being created by new local org Intersection 911.
The first video urged viewers to stop and help out people who have a flat tire or other mechanical problems.
The second video, released this week, urges viewers to pass on the left, and to exit the bike lane before passing a slower rider. Watch it here (or here for a larger image):
Q & A with Torsten Kjellstrand of PDXCross
The seasoned crew of professional photographers that publish the PDXCross blog are back at it again for 2009. Last year, “the improbable group of un-hipsters” established their site as a must-visit destination following the weekend’s cross action.
Their photographs are poignant, expressive, exciting, and funny — and that’s just a few of the many words that describe them.
With the 2009 season already underway (and the big Cross Crusade opener this Sunday), I caught up with PDXCross photographer Torsten Kjellstrand (who also happens to race now and again) for a little Q & A. Below he shares more about their reception by the community, the photos themselves, the PDXCross team, and more.
September, 2009 site stats and top stories
Here are BikePortland’s traffic stats from the month of September, 2009.
The most popular post of the month, after being noticed by news aggregator Fark, was our story about the beer-pouring, pizza-delivering, fully amplified Hopworksfiets built by local company Metrofiets.
Following in popularity on BikePortland in September (counted by page views using Google Analytics) was our post about the Flaming Lips’ open casting call for naked bikers. Then a report of the peaceful passing of a Cycle Oregon participant and an article about the new speed bumps installed in Riverview Cemetery.
Rounding out the top five was our exclusive unveiling of new local bike manufacturer, Cycle Works Oregon and their brand, Beloved.
Kids will take to the streets in 2nd annual Tour de Ladd
Just got the announcement and details about the second annual Tour de Ladd event. I attended this last year and it was excellent. Tons of schoolkids doing laps on carfree streets around the Ladd’s Addition neighborhood. What could be better?
The Tour de Ladd is put on by Abernethy School, which is located in the heart of one of Portland’s most bike-centric neighborhoods. The event is set up like the traditional walk-a-thons that many of you probably had at school when you were a kid. Parents and community members make pledges and money is raised based on the number of times they complete a 1/4 mile loop around the neighborhood.
Ace Hotel guests now get customized Swobos
bikes have been customized for
Portland streets (and weather)
by local bike shops.
The Ace Hotel in downtown Portland is set to unveil a new fleet of customized Swobo bicycles that can be checked out by guests.
Back in December of 2006, The Ace was at the head of the Dutch Bike Invasion when they made news for offering bikes to guests made by Vancouver BC-based Jorg & Olif.
