City to hold Platinum award party; will name first winner of ‘Bicycle Friendly Community Award’

The City of Portland has just announced their plans to celebrate the recent designation of Portland as a Platinum-level bicycle friendly community.

The event will be held at City Hall this next Thursday (8/7).

According to an email from PDOT, Along with bike-inspired festivities like a “Platinum fuel pump” that will dispense root beer, a photo exhibition and a Platinum-themed cake, the City will also announce the first-ever recipient of Portland’s, “Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community Award for helping make Portland the #1 Bicycling City in the United States.”

The winner of the award will be the official Grand Marshall in the upcoming Bridge Pedal ride on August 10th.

Mayor Tom Potter will also make the official proclamation of “Bicycle Friendly Community Day” and U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer will be on hand to toast Portland’s success.

    If Sen. Prozanski's effort to get an all ages helmet law succeeds, perhaps the League will see fit to give Portland a Styrofoam rating next time.

    Also, if they had a cake with a frosting-based cyclist on the hood of a frosting-based car, that would be totally awesome.

    I don't mean to sound cynical (yes I do) but, "Bicycle Friendly...Oregonian" in the same breath? Yikes!

    I would like to take a moment (beforehand) to thank all of the amazing and hard-working politicians, activists, bike-funnists, and city employees (you know who you are) who have made this happen.
    If Portland was filled with the same indifference that permeates the much of America, we would never have even gotten Silver. Great job everyone!
