I’m glad Jonathan set the record straight in regard to “road taxes.”
As for requiring bicycles to be registered, they are not motorized vehicles and therefore should not be subject to the same requirements as motor vehicles. I mean, really, where would it stop? Registration for skateboards, scooters, and baby strollers? How about a sidewalk tax for pedestrians?
I suspect part of the frustration and anger some drivers feel toward cyclists has to do with the fact that they need to drive more carefully now to avoid hitting us. They can’t ignore us anymore. In that sense, we may be cramping their style. There’s been a tipping point in Portland–we’re here to stay, and they’re going to have to get used to it. Some may resent that.
I do drive occasionally, and I’m always considerate of cyclists, although the gonzo ones who blast through red lights and don’t wear helmets do annoy me. If only all car drivers could be forced to ride through downtown on a bike, a new level of empathy might arise!
