Stolen: Ritchey Outback – Recovered!

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

I locked it and my helmet with a fairly heavy cable to an
8-ft tall signpost in front of Pazzo’s Restaurant, 627 SW
Washington St at 1:30PM yesterday. They were gone an hour
later.

it’s a blue Tom Richie fillet-brazed “Outback” model with cool u-brake in the rear,
a rear Blackburn rack and fenders with white mudflaps. I
since added a wicker front basket (supported by that lamp
bracket) added another lamp bracket on the fork blade and
changed to a clear water bottle. The serial number on the
bottom bracket, 70351, had the first two digits covered by
the bolted-on cable guide. It had Specialized FatBoy slicks
and was otherwise original, circa 1977.

Thanks for your work on stolen bike listings and all the
rest! I’m buying new u-locks and just using cables for the
wheels.

Bryant St. Bike/ped bridge

[The Bryant Street bike/ped bridge
over I-5 in North Portland.]

Yesterday I met ODOT transportation planner Joyce Felton. Joyce is in charge of the seven community enhancement projects ODOT is funding as part of their I-5 Delta Park Project.

One of those projects is the Bryant Street Overpass, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that crosses I-5 in North Portland between Portland Blvd. and Lombard. ODOT has allocated $50,000 to improve it and Joyce is looking to the community for ideas and plans for how to spend that money.

Stolen: Red Electra Townie

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

On the night of August 18, 2006 my bike was stolen on 30th and Belmont 20 . . Of course it helped that this was the one time I merely locked it to the wheel and not the frame(I never do this, must have been in a hurry). It was(is) a red Townie Electra cruiser with small paint damage to the mid-bar and a partially undone right handle leather strap. Furthermore the rear fender is gray with an orange strap.

thanks
Stephanie

Willamette Week does bike theft cover story

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

[Still from Willamette Week video
shows intern using bolt cutters while
people ignore him completely.]

Just noticed the Willamette Week has devoted a cover story to bike theft. They sent out intern Josh Silverman to steal his own bike in broad daylight to see if anyone would stop him (no one did).

They also made a video documenting the experiment.

They got the idea for their story from a video called “Bike Thief” by The Neistat Brothers that was all over the web a few months ago. In that video actors also stole their own bikes but used power tools on busy New York City streets. No one even batted an eye.

Transportation diplomat launches new blog

Bridge Pedal 2006

[Aaron and his couch
at Bridge Pedal.]

Self-described “transportation diplomat” Aaron Tarfman has launched a new blog. “Innovative Transport” will chronicle his bikey adventures and share his insights on urban planning and infrastructure.

Tarfman is a professional architect who rode his bicycle across country from New York City to Portland in 2003 and has become a devoted volunteer and friendly fixture on the local bike scene ever since. He plays an active role with the Exchange Cycle Touring Club, Shift, and a fledgling group advocating for more car free streets.

You might remember my post last winter about Tarfman’s fantastic collection of virtual tours of Portland bike routes.
