BikePortland on YouTube

The Portland Art Museum has expanded in the most Portland way possible — by including a tunnel for biking and walking through their shiny new Rothko Pavilion! This project is a triumph and something all of us should be proud of. And as you learn in this video, it would have never happened without the voices and work of advocates who spoke up about initial plans that didn't include the bike tunnel.

New Bike Path Through Portland Art Museum
After a man was killed while biking on Highway 43 last week, I visited the site where it happened to expose not only its dangers, but to highlight this unacceptably unsafe gap in our regional bike network.

The location is Hwy 43 just north of S Radcliffe Rd. Police say the rider was going southbound when he was hit from behind by a driver.

Is This Fatal Crash Site the Scariest Place to Bike in Portland?
Families for Safe Streets Portland Board Chair Michelle DuBarry talked to me about their event on Sunday where they announced a major campaign to bring speed-limiting technology to Oregon. DuBarry's toddler was hit and killed while in a crosswalk in 2010 and she has devoted her life to making streets safer.

In this interview, she talks about the annual World Day of Remembrance event held in East Portland on Sunday and shares more about the work FSS Portland is doing on the "Stop Super Speeders" campaign.

Traffic Crash Survivors Want to Stop Super Speeders
Life After Cars co-authors Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear swung by the Shed during a visit to Portland as part of their book tour. You probably know this duo from The War on Cars podcast. Their new book covers many of the same topics, in a much more convenient form factor!

This is a highlight reel from our interview, but since I also shared a podcast from the conversation we had at Bike Happy Hour just a few hours after this, I figured a highlight reel would suffice.

The War on Cars is sweeping America thanks to Doug and Sarah and after watching this you'll understand why.

In the Shed With Authors of Life After Cars
This is Washman Car Wash CEO David Tarlow speaking Friday at the Policy and Budget Committee meeting for TriMet's 82nd Avenue Transit Project.

I feel like if people with power and influence are going to work hard to oppose something as important as bus lanes on 82nd Avenue, I think everyone needs to know what their argument is.
Debunking an Anti Bus Lane Argument
Abdulrahman "Abe" Alkhamees is the man behind The Paperclip, which I've followed for years on Instagram for his excellent photography and profiles of riders and framebuilders. Abe's latest project is a square-bound magazine. He stopped by the Shed with a copy to tell me about his inspiration, what stories made the cut, and more.

Pre-orders for the $25 magazine are open until November 14th. Half the proceeds from sales will be donated to the Gaza Sunbirds paralympic cycling team, who also are one of the stories featured in the issue.

Sorry for the rant but I'm tired that year after year we see the same crappy engineering and lack of maintenance that leads to barely usable bike lanes.

If we really want more people to ride bikes year-round, we must give them a more welcoming place to do it. These annual obstructions have been normalized and we need engineers and project planners to figure out better drainage methods to prevent flooding and we should expect regular sweeping on major routes like here on N Lombard where bike riders have to choose between safety and slipping/flooding.
The real reason cyclists don't ride in the rain!!
On Sunday I joined a pair of advocates led by Sarah Risser from the Portland chapter of Families for Safe Streets, whose mission is to make sure people don't forget that 82nd Avenue is a dangerous street where the decisions we make too often lead to people being killed in traffic crashes.

Come along as I document the work of Sarah Risser and Ted Buehler to install 20 memorial signs along 82nd Avenue — one for each person killed in a traffic crash on that street since 2016.

I recently rolled through the City of Portland's $22 million SW 4th Avenue project. It sets a new bar for bike infrastructure in our city! The project includes a new protected bike lane, new pavement, new signals, new bus lane, ADA curbs and sidewalks, lighting, and more.

Ride Portland's Best Downtown Bike Lane
Ride Portland's first major rainstorm of the season with me! I roll around N/NE Portland to see how bike lanes are holding up, learn a few rain riding tips and theories along the way, stop for a beer at Migration Brewing, and hear my impressions of some quality rain gear (watch until the end to see how it held up after an hour of wet riding).

Ride a Portland Rainstorm
"This administration will only do good things by accident," said former U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer at the 30th annual MPACT conference in downtown Portland this morning. Blumenauer, who founded this conference (as Rail-Volution) in 1996 urged city planners to flex their own muscle and reminded them they cannot count on Trump.
