BikePortland on YouTube

Portland Trophy Cup kicked off Tuesday night and nearly 400 people lined up to take part — including loads of women and beginners. This event has become just as much a party and place to hang as a competitive race; but it's got that too!

Portland's Weeknight Cyclocross Race is a Big Party
Juan Carlos González grew up in Forest Grove and rode the Line 57 bus on Tualatin Valley Hwy (OR 8) as a small child. Now, as a member of Metro Council (a regional, elected planning organization), and a candidate for Metro President, he's making moves to bring $300 million worth of bus rapid transit and other updates to the dangerous highway aimed at taming car traffic and increasing rates of bicycling, walking, and public transit use.

I met up with González at an annual cleanup event he hosts alongside the highway on Saturday, September 9th.

The Politician Who Wants to Fix Tualatin Valley Highway
Something new from me... just a check-in about the Mayor Wilson interview that turned into a pitch for more funding to support the work I do every day.

Checking in on Mayor Wilson and why you should support BikePortland
All over Portland this week, bike bus leaders - or in this case a bike train conductor 😎 - showed us what it’s like to care for our community.

Nic Cota doesn’t even have a child at Beach Elementary (yet), but he cares so much about his neighborhood and about safe streets that he and his wife started this popular, weekly ride to school.

Ride along with Nic and the @beachbiketrain - and take a moment today to thank a bike bus leader!

Wilson credits his speech at Bike Happy Hour in February 2024 with launching his successful bid for mayor. Now he’s coming back to where it started because he wants our community to know he cares about street safety and cycling.

He calls himself a bike advocate and this is our chance to see if there's any meat on that bone.

UPDATE: This was shut down by protestors, but there's more to it than that. Read my thoughts on the event in the full recap here - https://bikeportland.org/2025/09/04/heres-what-happened-at-the-mayor-wilson-interview-last-night-396539
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson Interview at Bike Happy Hour
I spoke with 1000 Friends of Oregon Transportation Policy Manager and Move Oregon Forward Coalition organizer Cassie Wilson about the special session and the transportation bill. This is highlight reel from the 30-minute video I just posted.

Cassie Wilson on the Oregon Transportation Bill
Oregon is finally on the cusp of passing transportation funding legislation, but advocates like Cassie Wilson from nonprofit 1000 Friends of Oregon aren't celebrating. That's because Oregon Democrats — despite holding the Governor's office and supermajority in both chambers of the legislature — have watered the bill down significantly in an effort to build support for a tax hike right before an election year.

In this episode of the BikePortland Podcast, Cassie and I commiserate about the unfortunate state of affairs.

In this clip from the BikePortland Podcast, Sarah Risser and Jonathan Maus debate the efficacy of blaming individual drivers for their actions, or instead focusing on the broken system.
Podcast highlight: Blaming drivers, or nah?
Latest episode of the BikePortland podcast is a conversation between me, Jonathan Maus, and Portland-based road safety advocate Sarah Risser. Risser is a member of the City of Portland Pedestrian Advisory Committee and is a co-director of the local chapter of Families for Safe Streets, a national organization made up of people who've lost family members in fatal traffic crashes. Sarah was in the car when another driver slammed into them and killed her 18 year-old son Henry in 2019.

Our conversation was sparked after I scolded a bad driver in a recent social media post and she took some offense — telling me it's better to focus on the system and not the individual. I disagreed. So I had her over to The Shed to talk about it.

Should we even blame drivers for traffic crashes?
From our latest episode of "In the Shed," co-host Eva Frazier shares why she's hyped for Week Without Driving.

I went to practice with the Portland Metro Composite MTB Team, a nationally-sanctioned organization that competes all over the state and is made up of about 80, local middle and high schoolers.

I learned about their need for more places to ride and was inspired at how many female riders they've got on the team.

Hear from riders and the team director and see fun clips of the practice at Gateway Green.
