Broken glasses? Local shop owner grabs a bike chain link

Martina Fahrner of Clever Cycles on Southeast Hawthorne lived up to her bike shop’s name Tuesday after the bridge of her glasses broke.

“They just snapped in the middle,” the shop owner and Bicycle Transportation Alliance board member said in a phone interview Wednesday. “The next morning I went to work, and they snapped again. So I had to find something to stabilize them.”

The problem was that, even glued together, the glasses didn’t pinch her nose properly. So she started looking around the shop for “something flat and decorative.”

Christopher Igleheart, a veteran frame builder who moved from Wenham, Massachusetts to Portland in 2012, was involved in a collision with a motor vehicle on Tuesday afternoon. Igleheart remains in the hospital with a serious knee injury while he awaits word on whether or not it will require surgery.

According to Igleheart’s friend and shop-mate Joseph Ahearne, the collision occurred on NE Wheeler Avenue adjacent to the Moda Center (formerly Rose Garden Arena). Igleheart was apparently riding southbound on Wheeler when someone driving a car turned right into a parking lot driveway and clipped his rear wheel. Igleheart sustained scrapes and bruises on his hands and his head in addition to his knee injury.

Igleheart opted to not have a medical response come to the scene and he didn’t get information from the other party. He rode himself back to his shop a few blocks away and was taken to the emergency room by Ahearne (aboard the front rack of one of this cycle-trucks of course). Ahearne said Igleheart nearly passed out from the pain but is now recovering well.

First Look: Portland’s new solar-powered LED bike lane lights

As promised, yesterday the City of Portland installed solar-powered lights to delineate the bike lane on NE Couch as it approaches the Burnside Bridge.

The lights, imported from Denmark by Saris Racks, are part of a test by the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to see whether they improve visibility of the bike lane and provide a safety benefit for road users. Because of the “s-curve” at this location, some people tend to veer into the bike lane while driving onto the bridge.

City Auditor’s Community Survey shows Portland’s continued cycling stagnation

Not impressive.

The Office of the City Auditor released its 23rd annual Community Survey today and the results reveal yet another sign that the amount of people riding bicycles in Portland has reached a stubborn plateau.

The survey asked Portland residents to gauge a number of different city functions, from the quality of tap water to the smoothness of streets in their neighborhood. 9,800 surveys were sent and the results were taken from the 3,352 valid surveys (or 36 percent) that the Auditor’s Office received back. According to the City Auditor, “The purpose of our community survey is to provide the public and policy makers with information regarding resident satisfaction with City services. We encourage Council and bureau managers to study differences in community perceptions included in the survey and to consider where improvements in services are needed.”

State Sen. Jackie Dingfelder figured out the only way she could possibly get any greener: she’s cutting her commute from Salem to downtown Portland.

The Alice Award winner, Columbia River Crossing opponent, environmental consultant and presumptive “Environmental Champion of the Decade” in the state legislature (that’s from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters) starts a new job Monday as a senior policy advisor to Mayor Charlie Hales.

A Hales spokeswoman said Tuesday that because Dingfelder’s background is similar to a few other Hales staffers’, she hasn’t received any bureau assignments yet. She’s likely to receive a portfolio after her first week.

Dingfelder currently represents Legislative District 23, a swath of central Northeast and Southeast Portland. She’s likely to be succeeded by state Rep. Michael Dembrow.
