Due to the efforts of the Transportation Committee of the Sellwood Moreland Improvement League (aka the Sellwood neighborhood board), there are now Bike/Ped crossing advisory signs on SE 13th (headed northbound before it curves to the East and turns into Bybee) as well as new bollards placed in between the car lane and the bike lane on SE 14th north of Bybee. SE 14th at this location is a one way street (southbound), but for a low volume street has seen a lot of wrong-way drivers turning onto it and using the bike lane. This street is very high volume for pedestrians and cyclists, as it is the feeder street to Llewellyn Elementary School further North.

The Transportation Committee had been advocating for a crosswalk/signal at this intersection, but PBOT does not have the funds and motivation for a project there at this time (aside: the committee is looking into fundraising options to fund the project ourselves). That said I am personally really quite pleased that the two improvements were made within only a few months of the request and subsequent PBOT analysis.

My ideas to fix transit in Portland and everywhere in Oregon

— Get cars out of lanes used by Bus and MAX and Streetcars
— Enforce existing rules on speed and cell use, deeply investigate all crashes with a serious death or injury and pull data records.
— Reduce speed limits like Seattle has done. We must fund safety before we fund projects to widen roads and increase death rates.
— Stop repeat offenders
— Get cars off greenways. We need a network of streets like Sunday Parkways every day of the year.
— High Speed trail and complete the Salmonberry trail
— New leadership at ODOT focused on VisionZero , if the FAA can design our system for zero deaths we can do the same with roads
— Add 20 cents to the gas tax
— Give all 99 of Portland’s Neighborood associations a budget to fix the most deadly spots in their area.
— Replace all 7 members of the broken House Transportation committee appointed by Kotek. None of the members live in a city. ( see image)
— Take money away from ODOT and give to local transit managers

I find following and participating in comment-conversations mighty tedious without the long-standing option to subscribe (receive latest comments by email). I don’t have a smart phone or know how to implement the tricks some folks have mentioned for getting around this. If there is a workaround that non-computer nerds can avail themselves of, I’m all ears. Mostly I would like to know if this is a money thing, or something else? We’ve lost it before, and then it was brought back. Jonathan has not replied to my email queries about this issue.
