Next Monday, the Oregon Department of Transportation and the City of Portland Office of Transportation, with help from TriMet, are set to launch a media campaign to improve pedestrian safety.
The campaign — which has an emphasis on 82nd Ave — is called “I Brake for People” and it will include ads on TriMet buses, benches and shelters along with drive-time radio blurbs and of course what campaign would be complete without a bumper sticker…
With all the discussion going on about how to make bike travel safer on crowded downtown streets, I thought we should take a closer look at some of the options on the table.
The first one has to do with signage and how legislation, enforcement, and engineering deal with non-motorized vehicle travel lanes (previously known as bike lanes).
According to the law, a bicycle is a vehicle. So, it seems to follow that a bicycle lane should be considered (in the eyes of engineers and law enforcement professionals) as a vehicle travel lane, on par with motor vehicle travel lanes.
I got a call from a happy business owner on N. Mississippi Street this morning.
It was Bryan Steelman, owner of Por Que No taqueria (3524 N Mississippi Ave, just north of Fremont). He wanted to let me know that PDOT work crews have just installed his new on-street bike parking.
