Two new bike shows are being planned for the Portland area in 2010.

The Northwest Bike Show, “Where cycling comes full circle”, is slated for February 20-21 and will take place inside a 54,000 square foot hall at the Portland Expo Center. The event is being put together by the Hilsboro-based Convention & Meeting Planners of Oregon, Inc. (they’re also behind the Rose City Bridal Showcase). The CEO of the company, Lora Heil-Frone, has a booth here at the Oregon Bike Summit. She said highlights of her Northwest Bike Show will include a kids safety area, a performance stage, and hopefully (she’s still working on it) a stunt riding performance by the Dew Action Sports team.

Speaking at the opening session of the Oregon Bike Summit today, Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) Executive Director Scott Bricker gave a rundown of their existing priority bills in the 2009 legislative session.

With the door officially closed on Idaho Stops (interesting report about it on the Mercury blog today) and with news today that their Driver’s Education bill (HB 3252) will not move forward this session, the BTA is pouring all remaining efforts into their vehicular homicide bill, HB 3399.

“Frigging HUNDREDS of them,” is how Portland Craig Harlow described the scene when he and a group of friends noticed tacks strewn along the Springwater Corridor Trail on a recent ride.

Harlow says that they came across the tacks on Sunday, just east of Powell Butte near the bridge at SE Circle Ave. Harlow reported the incident into our B-SMaRT tracking tool where he wrote:

“We noticed a few more tacks on the path, and as we were picking them up we stopped approaching riders to warn them, so they started looking too. With about 10 of us looking we found about 300 strewn long 50 yards of the path.”

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

What: Want an upbeat, non-confrontational, FUN way to let your fellow Portland residents know how happy you are to have safe, accessible reproductive health care come to this (my, our) neighborhood? Then dress up (or not) and come out with a smile on your face to hang out and dance your ass off on the sidewalk for a couple hours! This is a family friendly event, and everyone is welcome. I would especially like to emphasize the fact that this is intended to be a POSITIVE, NON-CONFRONTATIONAL event. It’s more of a proactive action of our own accord, than a negative response. Action, not reaction!

Where: Meet at Irving park between 5 and 6, and then ride to NE MLK and Beech (or just meet us at the destination if you don’t have time after work, or whatever).

No Idaho Stops in Oregon: Bill fails to win necessary support

“…they [legislators] had heard from a number of constituents who were very concerned and opposed to giving cyclists what they viewed as special rights.”
–Doug Parrow, Chair of the BTA’s Legislative Committee

An effort to pass the “Idaho Stop Law” in Oregon has officially ceased all forward motion.

I confirmed this morning from Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) legislative committee chair Doug Parrow that they were not able to convince a key legislator to schedule a work session on HB 2690. As a consequence, the BTA will move onto other bills and shelve the Idaho Stop idea for now.

City asks for help to fund Sunday Parkways

“We know you don’t often receive requests like this from your City agencies. But Sunday Parkways isn’t business as usual.”
— From an email sent out to rally financial support for Sunday Parkways.

The City of Portland is looking to follow up the smashing success of their 2008 Sunday Parkways event — but they’re still about $27,000 short.

Looking to bridge that funding gap, the Transportation Options division (within the Bureau of Transportation) sent out an email last week asking for individuals to help them reach their $200,000 budget goal.
