presidency all wrapped up.

It’s election night and, while I haven’t done tons of coverage on all the races, I thought folks might want a place to chime in about what’s going on.

Many of the races have been decided, but there’s a tight battle brewing for who will be in the runoff for Metro president. Bob Stacey currently leads with 37% with Tom Hughes in second at 31%. Rex Burkholder is trailing Hughes by about 1,400 votes.

UPDATE: Looks like Stacey has one of the spots wrapped up. Hughes is likely to get the other one.

In the other interesting race, City Commissioner Dan Saltzman has avoided a runoff by getting 55% of the vote so far. His closest rival is Mary Volm with just 12%. Jesse Cornett has only garnered 6.9% of the vote so far. More updates are due from Multnomah County Elections Office at 9:00.

I wanted to do this story before Saturday’s Reach the Beach (a 100 mile ride that goes from Portland to the coast), but I figured it was still worth sharing…

Hendricks latest through revolving door at PPB Traffic Division

The Portland Police Bureau has announced another change atop the Traffic Division. Former Captain Eric Hendricks will now serve as the new Assistant Chief of Investigations in the Chief’s office. Hendricks was named Captain in April 2009, making him the sixth officer to lead the Traffic Division in the past five years.

Hendricks’ 13 month tenure is actually higher than the average for recent Traffic Division leaders. After Bill Sinnott retired in 2006, the the next four leaders — Marty Rowley, Mark Kruger, Vince Jarmer and Larry O’Dea — served nine, eight, six, and 11 month stints respectively.

The Traffic Division is the most important part of the Bureau for bike-related issues. They write 80% of traffic tickets, they conduct targeted enforcement actions, investigate bike crashes, escort bike (and other) parades, and generally have a lot of contact with the community.

Yesterday was the first day of business for Abraham Fixes Bikes (3508 N. Williams), a new repair shop that has opened on the corner of Fremont and Williams in North Portland (shop faces Fremont but is attached to a building with a Williams Avenue address).

Shop owner Abraham Sutfin, 27, had worked out of his nearby garage space for the last few years and when he heard about a space opening up in clear sight of one of Portland’s busiest bike streets, he jumped at the opportunity.

After sightings, ‘posse’ will roll out to find stolen bike

The Rubin family is making an all-out
effort to find this bike.
(Photo: Len Rubin)

This is turning out to be one of the most interesting stolen bike stories we’ve ever followed here on BikePortland.

Len and Tamara Rubin — owners of the prototype, one-of-kind folding bike that was reported stolen yesterday and which held the key to their future business (not to mention having immense sentimental value) — have been working non-stop to find it. The story has been picked up all over the local media (including a spot on FOX’s ‘Most Wanted’ segment) and Tamara Rubin reports that they’ve received four separate tips on the bike’s whereabouts as a result.
