Tonight is the monthly First Thursday art event in downtown Portland and there’s no better way to take it all in than with a guided bike ride to three — yes three — fantastic bike art exhibitions.

Portland Bicycle Tours is offering a free ride to the 2011 Oregonized Galleries Bike Show, the exhibition of Oregon Manifest bikes at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, and then opening night of the Artcrank Poster Show — and it’s all topped-off with a street party in the Pearl District.

TriMet decides against ‘sonic bike path’ idea on new light rail bridge

Remember TriMet’s idea to turn the bikeway on their forthcoming Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Bridge into a sonic piece of public art?

While TriMet says their public art advisory committee was “intrigued” by the concept, they weren’t ready to pull the trigger due to its price tag of over $200,000.

The idea, which was presented to the City of Portland’s Bicycle Advisory Committee back in February, was to add grooves in the pavement that, when rolled over with bicycle tires, would create a tune. While the “budget reality” wasn’t music to their ears, the committee also cited “unresolved technical issues and potential safety risks” as factors in their decision.

Occupy Portland, bikes, and your thoughts on the movement

Occupy Portland (a.k.a. Occupy Together) the local version of Occupy Wall Street and a national movement to protest the imbalanced influence of corporations in American politics (and a host of other social justice issues) begins today. People will gather at noon near the Saturday Market in Waterfront Park and march through downtown at 2:30.

Many people actively involved with the local movement are also people that I have photographed and profiled here on BikePortland over the years. And, as Elly Blue writes in a column today in Grist, bikes are sure to play a highly visible role in today’s event (I’ll guarantee you’ll see flag-flying tall bike riders).

Women remain hospitalized following Highway 101 collision

The two Canadian women involved in a collision Monday on Highway 101 north of Gold Beach remain hospitalized at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield (near Eugene) today.

30 year old Martha McClean remains in the Intensive Care Unit. That’s all I was able to find out about her condition after a call to the hospital today. McClean’s riding partner, 26-year-old Essya Mabrouka Nabbali, is listed in fair condition and one of her nurses told me she’s “stable” and “coming along.” The nurse also said Nabbali’s family is by her side.

Forum will discuss passing law, Skyline Blvd traffic safety issues

Residents around Skyline Blvd have scheduled a community forum next month to discuss road safety issues.

Hostilities between road users on narrow, winding rural roads like Skyline (and its many offshoots) got a lot of attention back in August when a local email list lit up with allegations of road rage and intimidating behavior by a man who lives on Rock Creek Road (near Skyline).

OHSU earns ‘Gold’ rating from League of American Bicyclists

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has earned a ‘Gold Bicycle Friendly Business’ rating from the League of American Bicyclists.

OHSU is Portland’s largest employer with 12,400 employees and is the largest organization to ever win a gold or higher designation from the League. The award was announced last month but League representatives presented OHSU with the award today.

PBOT action leads to solution in Greeley Ave bike lane parking situation

Last week I shared the story of an armored truck that had repeatedly violated Oregon law by parking in the bike lane on the southbound (downhill) side of N Greeley Ave outside the Adidas USA headquarters. Upon receiving an official complaint from North Portland resident Brett McLane, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) took action. I’m happy to report that they’ve worked out a solution to the problem.

But before I get to the solution, I thought it would be helpful for the community to learn more about how PBOT interprets ORS 811.550 (the law that makes it illegal to park in a bike lane), the steps they took to address the complaint, and their stance on bike lane parking in general.
