The notorious intersection of NE Couch and Grand has claimed another victim.

26-year old Laura Stanger was riding to work at 7:45 am Wednesday morning. She had a green light and was headed across Grand in the green-colored bike lane when a car directly adjacent to her suddenly — and without using a turn signal (according to Stanger) — turned right onto Grand.

The person driving the car slowed down, but then sped away. “This person obviously knew they hit me and left the scene,” says Stanger.

No more free rides for bikes on all but one Willamette River ferry – Updated

(Photo: Benn Schonman)

By September 1st, it will cost $1 to take your bike across the river on two of the three Willamette River ferries. People on bikes had previously been lumped in with walkers and were free to ride.

The three ferries that currently operate on the Willamette River are all located in areas full of great roads that are popular with weekend explorers, bike tourers, and event rides. The Canby Ferry (between Canby and Wilsonville) is on a route to Champoeg State Park, and the Wheatland and Buena Vista ferries (east of Salem) are gateways to some of the best rural riding roads in Oregon.

UPDATE: The Buena Vista began charging people with bicycles $1 on August 5th and the Wheatland Ferry will do the same starting September 1st (the Canby Ferry will remained free for bike-riding passengers).

I’ve heard from two readers recently who were caught off guard by the change. Both of them were curious why people walking were still free but bike-riding passengers must pay the new fee.

Railroad track project will smooth out Naito: “Gap” fix due next spring

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Existing tracks that cross Naito.
(Photo: Google Streetview)

Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) started on a project this morning to repair their tracks on NW Naito Parkway just north of the Steel Bridge. The existing tracks have large gaps between them that make for a bumpy and jarring experience for people riding bicycles.

Yesterday’s announcement didn’t share many details about what the project would entail, so I asked PBOT traffic safety manager Mark Lear for more details. I also inquired as to whether or not we could expect a fix to the “Naito Gap” with this project (the gap is a section of road where the bike lane and shoulder both drop, creating a squeeze situation north and south of the Steel Bridge overpass – see photo below).

Just before noon today, 81 year old Dale Beacock of Vancouver, Washington died while bicycling on Highway 101 north of Garibaldi. Beacock collided with a logging truck.

According to the Oregon State Police, the crash happened around 11:50 am. A truck pulling a loaded log trailer struck Beacock when, “for an unknown reason” Beacock’s bicycle “swerved in to the southbound lane and collided with the rear of the pole trailer as it was traveling past.” Beacock’s son was riding several yards behind him and was uninjured.

The crash happened near milepost 54, which is right near Barview Jetty Park, a popular picnic area and campsite just outside of Garibaldi.
