Traffic Advisory from ODOT:

Inspections close freeway ramps and bike/ped trail

Routine inspections planned for March 5-12 on the Fremont and Steel Bridges

A contractor for ODOT plans to inspect the six east Fremont Bridge approaches (Interstate 405/Interstate 5 interchanges) and the Steel Bridge from Sunday, March 5, through Sunday, March 12. Inspections will close ramps from the I-405 and I-5 interchanges on the Fremont Bridge, the bicycle and pedestrian path on the lower deck of the Steel Bridge and the upper deck of the Steel Bridge for two nights…

The work will require intermittent single-lane and ramp closures to allow crews to safely use snooper trucks, bucket trucks, aerial lift platforms and ladders. Only one ramp will close at a time. During the ramp closures, drivers will follow a signed detour. The work will take place each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Steel Bridge bike and pedestrian path and upper deck closures

Inspections of the lower deck of the Steel Bridge require closing the lower deck and bicycle and pedestrian path Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Path users may use the upper deck during the path closures or use another bridge to cross the Willamette River.

The inspection work will close the upper deck of the Steel Bridge to all traffic on Saturday, March 11 and Sunday, March 12, from 1:50 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. During these closures motorists can use the Burnside, Morrison or Broadway Bridges.

Inspections of the Fremont and Steel Bridges are routine and take place every two years.

PBOT Budget Advisory Committee asks Council to look at new revenue sources

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

It’s no secret that PBOT faces historic budget cuts. But there’s a big part of the conversation that hasn’t really gotten the attention it deserves: With gas tax and other motor vehicle-related revenues (like parking meters and registration fees) decreasing, more people choosing bikes and electric cars, and federal funding as unstable as ever, we need to figure out a new revenue stream.

Unfortunately, this discussion is hampered by politics. Raising the cost of using our transportation system is always makes for prickly politics, but especially in the current economic climate, elected officials around the region are loathe to propose new revenue streams. At the outset of this year’s budget talks at PBOT, Mayor Sam Adams — a man who pushed a major “street fee” initiative a few years ago — told his bureau director that he did not want to hear any ideas about new revenue. All talks about how to find more money, Adams said, were off the table.

In Clackamas County, bikes cause ‘considerable’ road damage

Reader Chris S. came across a story in The Oregonian yesterday that made him do a double-take. In a report about the ‘State of the County’ event held by the Clackamas County commissioners, the topic of bicycles came up. The event allowed citizens to ask commissioners any question they’d like. The Oregonian reporter shared a few of the questions and summarized the answers.

Here’s the first question in the story — and the one that Chris said he “had to read a few times to make sure I read it correctly.”

Q: Bicyclists and studded tire users cause considerable road damage. Why shouldn’t bicyclists and studded tire users be required to pay an annual fee to the county for wear and tear?

Tomorrow morning I’ll hop in a car with a friend and drive 600 or so miles to Sacramento for the 2012 North American Handmade Bicycle Show. NAHBS is the annual showcase of America’s budding handmade bike industry. I’m going down to document and support the 18 or so Oregon companies that will exhibit and to get a sense of where handmade bike making is headed.
