Don’t say it never happens: One woman’s story of a ‘hit-and-ride’

“I literally was just speechless with my jaw dropped as he rode away.”
— Elisabeth Bowers

Last week I got an email from Portland resident Elisabeth Bowers. She was involved in a hit-and-run on and wanted me to know about it. That part isn’t strange. I get a fair amount of emails like that every month. What was different about Elisabeth’s situation is that she was in a car and the person who hit her was on a bike. She called it a “hit-and-ride”.

Here’s her story:

On SW Broadway bikeway, a solution for LIFT vehicle access

It’s been an issue ever since the protected bike lane (a.k.a. cycle track) on SW Broadway went in: How to improve access for TriMet LIFT Paratransit Program vehicles that need direct access to the curb in order to drop off and pick up people with disabilities, while not blocking the flow of bike traffic.

In its current configuration, the bike lane on SW Broadway near Portland State University is curbside and the auto parking lane is in the street. This was done to create a protective buffer between people on bikes and people in moving auto traffic. The problem is, LIFT vehicles need to extend a ramp so that riders with wheelchairs can roll directly onto the sidewalk.

When the SW Broadway bikeway first opened, vans parked at the curb. Some people on bikes were perturbed by the blockage of the lane, which forced them to either stop and wait, or squeeze between the LIFT vehicles and parked cars. “TriMet has come under criticism by a vocal minority of cyclists for blocking the cycle track,” reads a PSU document about the new plan.

ODOT roundup: First green lane; director on freight policy; and a big job opening

Seeing green on SW Barbur.
(Photo: Alan Love)

I’ve got a couple of news tidbits from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) that have piled up in my inbox so I thought I’d share them all at once. From a new job opening in their Active Transportation section to the installation of their first-ever green colored bikeway, the agency continues to show positive progress.

First, according to a reader who rides on SW Barbur everday, the Oregon Department of Transportation has just completed the main part of their Barbur Blvd Bike Improvement Project (a project we shared more about back in March). Reader Alan Love reports that ODOT has added green coloring the southbound bike lane on Barbur Blvd. that leads to the Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway turnoff.

Here are two photos of the new markings sent in by Alan…

12 days into Pedalpalooza (about half way through!) and the rides and good times show no sign of slowing down. In the interest of keeping you in the loop about what’s going on out there, I thought I’d share a brief update on just some of the rides going on…

Thursday’s highlight was Darcelle’s Parade of Glitz and Glitter, a tour of downtown Portland with none other than the famous, 81-year-old drag queen herself. Ride organizer Carl Larson said Darcelle (in her usual sequin dress) rolled along with the 70-person ride in a pedicab and pointed out various places of interest. Portland Mercury reporter Sarah Mirk was there and snapped some great photos

Sunday’s inaugural Disaster Relief Trials (DRT) was a big success on many levels.

The mock disaster scenario (a major earthquake) that the event was based on gave emergency responders and cargo bike enthusiasts a lot to think about. Disaster preparedness volunteers with the City’s Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NET) and the County’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service learned how to relay messages during a crisis, cargo bike builders learned how their designs performed under a variety of challenging, real-world conditions, and cargo bike operators learned how to push through the limits of pedal power.
