Bicycling (and Portland) stars in new global initiative to spur physical activity

From Designed to Move report.

A new report compiled and presented by Nike Inc., the American College of Sports Medicine and the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education at this week’s Clinton Global Initiative meeting, includes bicycle transportation as one of the key solutions to combat the world’s “urgent” physical inactivity crisis.

The report, titled Designed to Move: A Physical Activity Action Agenda, highlights six efforts from around the world that “are literally changing the way people move throughout daily life.” One of those six is how Portland has used “collaboration and culture to progress the bicycle movement.” In addition to the prominent role bicycling plays, the report also provides advocates a powerful new set of talking points.

As for Portland’s starring role, here’s an excerpt from report*:

Thoughts on carrying bikes as Gibbs Bridge elevator closes again

Annual BAC facility tour-15

A sign of disrespect? Or a minor inconvenience?
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

On the eastern end of the new (and carfree) Gibbs Street Bridge over I-5, there are two options: You can either carry/push your bike up or down the many flights of stairs, or you can wait for the elevator. When the elevator is not working — which has been the case four times since the bridge opened in July — you are left with only one option. And, as I noted earlier this month, the stairs can be challenging if you have a bike.

This morning, the City of Portland announced yet another closure of the elevator. This would be the fifth closure in just two months. Is this elevator unreliable? Is it time to improve the stairs to make them easier to navigate with a bike in-arms?

Conscious Commuter celebrates first batch of Portland-made frames

The first frames off the production line.
(Photos: Conscious Commuter Corp.)

Last month we shared the story of Kinn Bikes, a new company that decided to make their frames right here in Portland. Now, another company has decided that Portland is the place to manufacture their bikes. Conscious Commuter Corporation, a company with offices downtown and in Los Angeles, just had a batch of 50 frames made at Zen Bicycle Manufacturing in North Portland.

We shared the launch of Conscious Commuter in June of 2011 and then caught up with them a few months later as they went public with their successful Kickstarter campaign (that raised over $25,000).

According to Bob Vander Woude, the company’s President and CEO, they were very close to producing the frames in China. “There were a lot of people in the industry telling us we had to manufacture in China or we wouldn’t be able to compete,” he told me via phone today. Vander Woude said they were all lined up for a trip to China to visit potential factories. “The more we thought about it,” he said, “It just really started resonating with our core principles,” Vander Woude said about the decision.
