The City of Portland has just compiled the numbers from their fall 2012 Safe Routes to School parent survey. The results show an encouraging upward trend of biking and walking rates. In fact, 10.3 percent of the fall 2012 survey respondents said they biked to school. That’s a 36 percent increase from fall 2011 and it’s the highest bike mode share recorded they’ve ever recorded.

When taken together, the walking and biking mode share is 42.7 percent — an increase of 38 percent since 2006.

Welcome to the latest installment in our Ride Along series. I have an exciting announcement: MetroMile is now the presenting sponsor of this column. Thanks guys! Now onto your regularly scheduled programming…

Last week I joined 36-year-old Justin Gast for his 25 mile (one-way) commute into work. Justin lives in Kenton (near Posies Cafe on N. Denver) and he rides to the Washington County Public Services building in downtown Hillsboro where he works in the solid waste recycling division. This was my first Ride Along that went into Washington County and it was also multi-modal. Sit back and join Justin and I on his pre-dawn commute…

National data shows bike fatalities up 8.7 percent in 2011

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

New analysis of traffic collision data released today by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows a decrease in overall fatalities from 2010 to 2011. However, in the “pedalcyclist” category (the strange word the feds use to describe people that are biking) there was an 8.7 percent increase.

The new analysis shows that overall, highway deaths fell to 32,367 in 2011, the lowest level since 1949 and 1.9 percent below 2010. This continues a downward trend in highway deaths in recent years.

A press release issued by the USDOT acknowledged that people drove 1.2 percent fewer miles in 2011 than 2011, but the drop in roadway deaths, “significantly outpaced” that decrease.

The Monday Roundup

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

We came across many noteworthy and important stories last week that deserve your attention. Here we go…

— David Alpert of the excellent Greater Greater Washington blog argues in the Washington Post that, instead of focusing on fault when tragedies occur, we should instead look at road design. “Our roads shouldn’t exact such a high price for our inevitable moments of carelessness, especially when the pedestrian pays the higher price for the error either way.”

— The Lovely Bicycle blog shared a thoughtful review of Grant Peterson’s book, Just Ride.

— One aspect of bicycling that is enjoying quite a renaissance these days is bike touring. Don’t believe me? Check out this rundown of nine indicators that bicycle travel and tourism is “booming.”

more of this possible.

Portland-based Universal Cycles has donated $15,000 to the Northwest Trail Alliance to help in their ongoing mission to build more mountain bike trails in the Portland metro area.

The donation will go towards the local matching funds required for a a $55,248 grant the NWTA received last fall. That grant, which the NWTA was awarded through the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP) will be used to purchase trail building equipment.

The NWTA is currently involved with trail building projects in many areas including Stub Stewart State Park, Forest Park, Cascade Locks, Sandy Ridge, and others. The RTP grant and this new $15,000 donations from Universal will allow them to buy a “Ditch Witch” machine and other tools to complement the ST240 trail building machine they purchased back in 2010.
