Riders cheer City of Vancouver decision for bike lanes on MacArthur

MacArthur Blvd

The City of Vancouver has just announced that the entire stretch of MacArthur Blvd from East Mill Plain to South Lieser Road will have a dedicated bike lane.

Thanks to the diligence and perseverance of activists and local bike riders, the city reversed an earlier decision to remove bike lanes and replace them with sharrows along a popular bike commuter and recreational route, and is now planning a ‘right-sized’ road with one lane of traffic and a buffered bike lane in each direction. “The reconfigured MacArthur will continue to meet the needs of the current traffic volumes,” reads the City’s project website, “while allowing for full bike lanes in each direction.”

As promised, PBOT will beef up diversion on Michigan Ave neighborhood greenway

Michigan neighborhood greenway-2

PBOT project manager Ross Swanson (red shirt)
and Piedmont residents Justin Thompson (middle)
and Noah Brimhall discuss ideas to make Michigan Ave
work better.

Nearly two years ago, the Bureau of Transportation made a promise to residents of the Piedmont neighborhood: If a partial median at N. Rosa Parks Way and Michigan Avenue (map) doesn’t reduce cut-through traffic on the Michigan neighborhood greenway, they’ll beef it up. Yesterday, project manager Ross Swanson said he’d do just that.

Michigan is a unique case for PBOT. It’s the only major neighborhood greenway route in the city directly adjacent to an interstate highway. During the evening rush hour, “regional drivers” (which is, I think, PBOT’s politically correct way of saying Washington drivers) race up Michigan in an effort to bypass the daily gridlock on northbound I-5. The traffic and inconsiderate driving irks people who live on Michigan and the presence of so many cars flies in the face of the core mission of neighborhood greenways — to create conditions for low-stress bicycling.

PBOT Commissioner Steve Novick visits Breakfast on the Bridges

Breakfast on the Bridges - Hawthorne-17

Commissioner Steve Novick (blue shirt) mixed it up with
the crowd on the Hawthorne Bridge this morning.
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

City of Portland Transportation Commissioner Steve Novick showed once again this morning that he’s a hands-on leader. In the past few months (even before Mayor Hales gave him the PBOT portfolio), Novick has shown up to support walking, biking, and transit.

This morning he and his policy director Katie Shriver walked a few blocks from their City Hall offices to the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge where volunteers with Shift were holding their monthly Breakfast on the Bridges event.

Breakfast on the Bridges is a proud Shift tradition that started years ago as a way to create community and offer a friendly smile and free coffee and munchies for people riding bikes. Fruit, coffee and other foods are donated by local stores and volunteers wake up early to brew fresh coffee to serve to anyone who rides by. The event happens on both the Hawthorne and Steel Bridges.
