Sellwood Cycle Repair is seeking a full-time, career-oriented bike mechanic for a year-round position. The ideal candidate has several years of professional experience working on all styles of bikes. This person has experience with all levels of bike service, including complete overhauls and wheel-building. A strong background with suspension and hydraulic brake service is a major plus, but not necessary. Bike and merchandise sales are required as needed, although this is not a primary focus.

This candidate is detail-oriented, able to accept feedback and to give it as well, is an excellent problem solver, and has a desire to learn, despite their level of experience. Most importantly, this person communicates clearly and positively with co-workers and customers alike. We emphasize a commitment to excellent customer service with an ability to work with anyone.

The weather is perfect for biking so we hope many of you are taking advantage of it. Lots of folks will check out the St. Honore Criterium in northwest Portland on Saturday. On Sunday, there’s a Portland edition of the Rapha Women’s 100. Meet at Ristretto Roasters (3808 N Williams) at 7:30 am (more details on the Facebook page).

I’ll be heading out for a short ride and thinking about bike stuff (as always). Eight years ago I wrote a Declaration of Independence from cars and I just read it again the other day. It’s sort of cheesy, but it also sort of captures how I still feel today.

We’ll be posting a few stories tomorrow and then it’s back at it on Monday.

New hiker-biker camping area on the Oregon Coast

This just in from a reader who spotted it in an email from the Adventure Cycling Association:

NEW PORT OF SIUSLAW HIKER-BIKER CAMP
Robert Forsythe, manager of the Port of Siuslaw in Florence, Oregon, has announced the opening of a twelve-site camping area at the Port’s campground designated exclusively for cyclists and hikers. The hiker-biker campsites are at the east end of the campground, which overlooks the Siuslaw River estuary at 100 Harbor Street in historic Old Town Florence. “We’re very excited to offer this service for the thousands of hikers and cyclists who travel the Oregon coast each year,” Forsythe said, adding that the new area features twelve windbreaks created from repurposed timber, with eye bolts and cleats mounted to the wood to allow campers to secure their gear.

“We worked with local bicycle and hiking enthusiasts in designing the site,” Forsythe said, “and included their suggested amenities,” which also include water, picnic tables, showers, and wifi. The new sites should be well used: It’s estimated that more than 5,000 people bicycle Highway 101 through Florence each year, and that some 2,000 hike the Oregon Coast Trail.

The new campsites are first come-first served, and rent for $8 per person (other sites in the campground may be reserved online or by calling 541-997-3040). Click the link to view an illustration of the entire campground and photos of its various elements:

Two new trails opening at Sandy Ridge this weekend

Now there are two more reasons to ride at Sandy Ridge.

Sandy Ridge, the popular mountain bike trail-riding area just 40 miles east of Portland, just got even better. Two new trails are set to open by this weekend bringing the total mileage of bike-specific trails in the system to over 15.

Adam Milnor, a recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management’s Salem District, shared the great news a few minutes ago:

Follow the Leader is a 1.65 mile advanced trail that features a challenging double black diamond segment. Riders start at the upper info kiosk and traverse a couple scree fields before fording Little Joe Creek. From there, the trail drops 350 feet in the next mile with some exposure, big grade reversals and plenty of opportunities for skilled riders to get off the ground.

Flow Motion is a 0.75 mile intermediate flow trail with incredible soil and more than fifteen berms. The trail drops 275 feet through a nice Doug fir and hemlock forest before crossing the road and tying directly into lower Hide and Seek Cut. Great pedal to payoff ratio, with an easy session opportunity using Homestead Road. Sure to see lots of traffic.

As hit-and-run victim leaves coma, suspect remains on the loose

Two weeks after a white Ford pickup reportedly hit him from behind at 60 mph, postal driver Mike Cooley is still in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and the person whose actions nearly killed him is still at large.

The crash took place June 15th on North Interstate Avenue near Greeley. Police have distributed photos of the truck that may have hit Cooley, with little results so far.

“There’s only been one tip, and it was completely bogus,” said Cooley’s wife, Lori Cooley, in an interview with BikePortland yesterday.
