36-year old Concordia neighborhood resident and artist Roger Peet got a rough start to 2012. Just about two hours into the new year he was the victim of a hit-and-run in North Portland that ruined his bike, broke his collarbone, and left him with a mountain of medical bills from his hospital visit.

Peet’s girlfriend Kathryn Doherty-Chapman, a 29-year old research student at Portland State University studying urban planning and transportation, got in touch with us to tell his story; in part because she just wanted others to know about it, but also because the alleged assailant is still on the loose.

Sullivan’s Gulch misses out on funding opp: Here’s what made the cut

Detail of proposed
improvements to SW Barbur Blvd.

ODOT has whittled down a list of 89 “non-highway transportation projects” vying for $21 million in federal flexible funds, to just 35. Three City of Portland projects have made it onto the second round; but unfortunately, a project that could have built the first segment of the Sullivan’s Gulch Corridor did not make the cut.

With cities around the state clamoring for federal funds as their local budgets shrink, the competition is fierce. ODOT received requests totaling $89 million for the $21 million in available funds, which the state has set aside specifically for “non-highway” projects.

Opinion: A biased look at Beaverton’s auto dealerships

The subtitle of the article, “City planners hope for more investment in urban renewal district,” is buried under the heading “Beaverton auto sales drive city economy.”

Full disclosure: I love bikes. I love riding them, talking about them, taking pictures of them, and just about anything else that involves them.

I live in the suburbs but my primary mode of transportation is a bicycle. I ride my bicycle nearly everywhere I go with only a few exceptions.

My love of bicycles probably makes me at least a little biased towards bikes and against cars, but I still drive on occasion. My wife and I use our car to visit family in rural areas of Oregon, and she has a 40-mile commute that would be impractical on a bike.

Steel Bridge upper deck closure starts tonight

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

If you ride the upper deck of the Steel Bridge be aware of a closure that goes into effect tonight. Statement from ODOT is below…

Jan. 9, 2011

Overnight Steel Bridge closures start tonight
Drivers can use Burnside or Broadway bridges

Oregon Department of Transportation maintenance crews will close the traffic lanes of the upper deck of the Steel Bridge for two nights this week, beginning at 10 p.m. Monday Jan. 9 and Tuesday Jan. 10 and ending at 6 a.m. each following morning.

During the closures, crews will perform maintenance on the bridge drainage system. The maintenance equipment is large enough that crews will need both traffic lanes to safely complete the work.

Drivers can use the Burnside or Broadway bridges while the Steel Bridge upper deck is closed. The sidewalks and the lower esplanade will remain open during the work. Five TriMet bus lines will be rerouted during the work: 4, 8, 35 and 44 will be rerouted over the Burnside Bridge and line 77 will travel over the Broadway Bridge.

No Old Town bus stops will be served by these lines. There will be no impact on MAX service.

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– Jack Becker, a former Imperial Oil engineer, is serving as chairman for Velo-City Global 2012. His background might seem contradictory to the goals of the conference but Becker has been working to make his home town of Calgary more bicycle friendly for years. He also sees bicycling as one part of a larger goal. Speaking with the Calgary Herald Becker said, “Cycling isn’t the goal…It’s one of the options for delivering livable, sustainable, active cities and urban centers.
