🚨

6/20: Hello readers and friends. I am having my second (of two) total knee replacement surgeries today so I'll be out of commission for a bit while I recover. Please be patient while I get back to full health. I hope to be back to posting as soon as I can. I look forward to getting back out there. 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

Alta Bicycle Share wins Chicago contract; responds to questions about selection process

Headlines in Chicago not what
Alta was hoping for.

Portland-based Alta Bicycle Share chalked up another huge victory last week when they were chosen by the City of Chicago to develop their $21 milllion bike sharing system. Alta already runs the highly successful Capital Bikeshare system and they were chosen last fall to implement New York’s City’s system, which will be the largest in the U.S..

While this should be a time of celebration over at Alta headquarters in Portland’s central eastside, the company is being forced to answer questions about the Chicago contract because a competitor who lost out on the bid is alleging that Alta used its high-level city relationships to unfair advantage in the selection process. Here’s more from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Fox News and Kona Bicycle Company highlight biking in Portland

Still from video by Kona on why
people like to bike in Portland.

Portland’s valuable biking brand continues to pay dividends for our city as two new pieces of bike-positive media are circulating the Web this morning.

The first is from Fox News. Yes Fox. While the abundance of love for Portland from the New York Times is nothing new, to have Fox put bikes front and center in a travel piece is a bit of an eye-opener. In their 10 reasons to fly to Portland, Oregon right now, Fox cites seeing “bike lovers” as one of the things to cross of your bucket list while here. Then, after you’ve eaten all our food and guzzled all our beer and spirits, the Fox piece reminds visitors to “Work it off” with a group bike tour, “… anywhere from an easy spin around downtown or a day out in the Gorge or up in wine country…”

The Monday Roundup

Who is this mystery rider in
Prospect Park West?
(Photo: @PSteely)

Here’s the news and other cool stuff that we can came across this past week…

– The National Bike Summit kicks off Tuesday night! Over 800 attendees are expected. Our very own Jonathan Maus will be there, so keep it tuned right here for photos and stories.

– Charity organization World Bicycle Relief (WBR) is hoping a bicycle manufactured entirely in Africa will be more reliable than the cheap, flimsy imports owned by many across the continent.

– As gas prices begin to soar before summer has even started, one bike shop near Los Angeles is helpping with pain at the pump by letting customers trade in their car towards the purchase of a new bike.

– Portland’s own Elly Blue sat down with Women on Bikes SoCal (the group working to double the number of women on bikes) to talk about her upcoming projects and the economics of bicycling.

New Forest Service plan would make 3,835 miles of eastern Oregon roads motor-free

New rules, if they survive a public comment
period, would outlaw ATVs and other motorized
vehicles in nearly 4,000 miles of eastern Oregon
forest land.

The new Travel Management Plan for the 2.3 million acre Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in eastern Oregon could be a boon for bicycling and the growing bicycle tourism industry. The plan, released yesterday by the United States Forest Service (USFS), would make thousands of miles of logging roads open only to non-motorized users.

Here’s more from The Oregonian:

“Starting in June, passenger cars, ATVs, dirt bikes and four-wheel-drive rigs can no longer travel on almost 4,000 miles of roads in Oregon’s largest national forest.

Soon off-limits to motor vehicles: 3,835 miles of roads and ATV trails in a 1.3 million-acre area of the forest in Union, Baker and Wallowa counties… When the plan goes into effect, only bicycles, hikers and horseback riders will be allowed on the target roads. Violations could bring a $5,000 fine.”

According to The Oregonian’s City Hall reporter Beth Slovic, PBOT Director Tom Miller is not likely to keep his job if Charlie Hales or Eileen Brady win the mayoral election.

Both candidates made their intention to make the change in separate interviews with The Oregonian this week:

“I believe we need to change the leadership at the Transportation Bureau, and we need to do it on day one,” Brady said in an interview with The Oregonian on Wednesday about her priorities should she win.

“This isn’t personal,” he [Hales] said on Friday. “There are major issues in the bureau, and it needs a fresh and fully qualified leader.”
