Yesterday evening I had the distinct pleasure of photographing the evening bicycle rush hour near the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn. A beautiful mural that adorns a downhill off-ramp of the bridge caught my eye and I thought it’d make a nice backdrop. The mural, Fictional Landscape by Abby Goldstein (located at Sands and Jay streets) is one of many urban art projects managed by NYC DOT and integrated into their bikeways.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke at the closing plenary of the NACTO Designing Cities Conference today. At an event held at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of NYU in Manhattan, Bloomberg shared his perspective on the role transportation plays in his city’s success.
Bloomberg was introduced by the Commissioner of New York City’s Department of Transportation (and President of NACTO), Janette Sadik-Khan. She hailed Bloomberg’s leadership, saying that, “It’s not an exaggeration to say, the impact he’s had on New York, the nation, and the world will be felt for a long time after he’s left City Hall.”

Meet at the OFA-Oregon Headquarters in Southeast Portland and join other cyclists as they ride to the Multnomah County Elections Office on SE 11th and Morrison. Description: The frame is crooked, but not visibly so. You can only really notice it while biking – the front wheel doesn’t align with the frame. The seat is white, and totally out of line with the rest of the bike (I installed it three days ago). The front wheel has a style fender that doesn’t prevent mud from going up, the back has a black fender that is attached to the frame with a piece of rope. The handle bars tape is taped down with purple blue tape ends.

Description: It’s blue and white with the Lemond decals peeled off in some places. The frame has a bunch of white reflective stickers on it, some flower-shaped, and that are long wavy strips. It has mostly shimano ultegra parts on it, but with a FSA gossamer crank (compact) and blue and white bar tape. The seatpost is frozen into the frame and as far as I know cannot be removed.

Much has been written lately about a “bicycling renaissance” that has taken hold in America. At the NACTO Designing Cities conference here in New York City, I’ve had the opportunity to learn about the reality behind that renaissance and I’m happy to say that it’s real. Nowhere was that more apparent that at a panel discussion I attended today titled, 8-80 Bikeways: Designing protected bikeways and bicycle boulevards to accommodate a broader range of users. The session featured updates on bikeway development from four cities: Portland, Indianapolis, Chicago and New York City.
