The public outreach process for the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s NE/SE 50s Bikeway project is nearing completion. Today, PBOT announced the final open house for the project for Wednesday, June 29 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish (5329 SE Woodstock Blvd).
The open house comes after 39 neighborhood and stakeholder meetings since August 2010. As we reported last week, the $1.5 million federally funded project will seek to improve bicycling conditions along a 4.3 mile stretch of 52nd and 53rd avenues from SE Woodstock to NE Halsey.

Thanks to new bridge, Esplanade near OMSI to re-open Saturday
The Oregonian reports that TriMet is all set to re-open the Eastbank Esplanade this Saturday. The transit agency closed a portion of the Esplanade just south of the Hawthorne Bridge near OMSI earlier this month in order to do preliminary construction on the forthcoming Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail bridge.
As The Oregonian’s Joseph Rose reported today, TriMet will continue to work on the project, but they’ve built a new temporary biking and walking bridge over their construction work. A tunnel under the bridge will allow large trucks and equipment to access the river without interacting with Esplanade traffic.

Portland’s flourishing cargo bike scene
Portland’s cargo bike scene is exploding with businesses, builders and enthusiasts coming together for networking, collaborations and more. This photo (and more below) was taken at a meet-up of cargo bike fans back in April and there’s another “Cargo Bike Roll Call” happening tomorrow night in Southeast Portland (5-8pm Cascade Barrel House, 939 SE Belmont).
