Street sprints return to Pearl District Saturday

The bicycle drag races known as “street sprints” are coming back to the Pearl District this Saturday. Last year, the inaugural event drew 80 competitors, all vying to see who was fastest over the three block course.

The ‘Speed Never Sleeps’ event is bike racing in its purest form; four riders start from a dead stop and the top two advance to the next round.There’s no drafting and no bumping (you must hold your line).

When you’re trying to save the world, who has time for romance novels and gossip magazines? If you’ve got some spare time over the long weekend or on your summer vacation, consider brushing up on the economic impacts of bicycling.

At Metro’s Quarterly Trails Forum earlier this week, Alta Planning and Design CEO Mia Birk made a presentation about the economic impact of trails.

After the meeting, Metro staff circulated a five-page handout titled, Economic Benefits of Bicycling Resources. The list was compiled by Alta (or at least it was on their letterhead).

Solution for Ladd Circle stop sign issue? Cookies

After reading and thinking about the latest debates over the stop signs at Ladd Circle, 24-year old Sellwood resident Joe Hand decided to take the issue into his own hands — or should I say, into his own oven.

Hand, a Colorado native who came to Portland to attend Reed College and then stayed here because he “loved it,” decided to embark on what he calls “an experiment in kindness.”
