Long weekend open thread

It’s a long weekend. Get on your bike and have fun!

It’s the start of a long weekend and I’m taking a break.

We’ve had yet another exciting and busy week here on the site and I appreciate everyone who has contributed to the many interesting conversations we’ve had.

Today I’m leaving town, headed out on a bike-camping trip with my family. We’ll be joining three other families on a ride from Portland out to Stub Stewart State Park near Vernonia. It’s sort of a sequel to the family bike camping trip we did back in July 2009 to Champoeg State Park — except this time we’ll have 20 people (12 kids and 8 adults)!

No matter what your plans are this weekend, I hope you enjoy the sun and have some fun on your bike.

Since I won’t be posting any more stories (barring a major news story that I can respond to on my phone with spotty reception), I’m leaving this story on the front page. Please share your plans and thoughts and I’ll see you back here with more news on Tuesday.

Want to throw out a plug for your friend’s bar? I live near downtown and I’m always interested to know when someplace new is opening.

My long weekend will be spent hanging 61 pieces of bike art in a Sydney gallery. I hope hope it adds a glow to cycling here in Sydney, being perhaps a small world first. 61works by the same artist, same topic, same place, the Tap gallery

…and how about coming by Niche Wine & Art for bike picnic supplies (cheese, wine, etc.) or to hear live Irish bar music (Cronin – Sat 7PM). Make your own bike adventure to the Historic Reserve or Frenchmans Bar Beach…

Will be visiting P-town for the next week. Is there anywhere showing TDF live in the morning? Or rebroadcast in the evening?

Champoeg’s got a great bike camp site…roll in, no reservations required…unlike the driver types, who need advance (read, last year and a credit card)- cyclists can pay cash. And no day use fees at all Oregon State Parks! Yea!….Metro, you can learn a thing or two about how to properly accomodate bikers from Oregon Parks.

That girl on the bike is taking a big risk with no helmet. I wonder if she has health care

Just like to say that I was visiting PDX for the past week and really enjoyed my time on the bike there. I was able to do the Sunday Parkways with my kids on an Xtra-cycle and loved it! Will always have to plan that into future visits. On a side note we celebrated the 4th by buying my wife a new Trek bike. She had been riding my old Schwinn but got spoiled by a Gary Fisher in Portland.

I capped off my weekend by falling off my bike and landing on my knee. Ouch. I still don’t know how I didn’t scrape up my right arm, but the bike’s got a few scrapes. Darn it.

I’ve been putting my (involuntary) time off from work to use by training for the Cycle Oregon Weekend. I really should spend a little more time on the job search though. :p
