I wouldn’t usually post something like this, but I’d love to see someone from Portland win this contest. Check out the details below:

For the first time ever, the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (Schiphol) have created a 10-City Bike Tour of Holland using KLM’s iconic ceramic blue houses as inspiration for the trail! And now we’re on the search for two incredible duos to bike their way through Holland, serving as travel hosts and sharing their experiences online with our thousands of fans across the globe!

Could two of YOUR readers at Bike Portland have what it takes to bike through Holland’s authentic towns and countryside? We’re looking for entries that showcase engaging on-air personalities, prove the team’s adept biking ability, and of course, demonstrates a passion for Holland! Audition videos can be uploaded and entered via Holland or KLM’s Facebook pages starting today through May 1, so please encourage your readers to enter this unique trip of a lifetime and upload their audition video today!

We will announce the two winning biking teams and how your readers can follow their adventures (and win special prizes just for watching!) in mid-May, so be on the lookout for a second announcement in a few weeks!

Green bikeways get interim federal approval

An FHWA decision now makes it easier
for cities to use green to designate a bikeway.

Living and biking in Portland, you might take the green pavement marking you see on bikeways throughout town for granted. But, like the blue color that came before it, this is an innovative treatment that was done without official approval from the Federal Highway Administration.

Today, we learned from a source in the planning field, that the FHWA has decided to give it’s stamp of approval (albeit interim) to, “the optional use of green colored pavement in marked bicycle lanes and in extensions of bicycle lanes through intersections and other traffic conflict areas.”

This is a big deal because it gives traffic engineers across the country the legal breathing room to use green pavement markings on bikeways.

If you were not able to make it to the open house for the North Williams Avenue Traffic Safety Operations Project on Saturday, you are in luck.

Thanks to the wonders of technology and a project consultant (Michelle Poyourow) that isn’t afraid to use it, you can attend a virtual open house. Below are the posterboards that were displayed (in order). You can also download a PDF of the displays here (7MB).

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just got word about Ride of Silence from organizer Brian Echerer:

Gathering Date: Wednesday May 18th, 2011
Gathering Time: 6:00 PM – Ride announcement 6:15 – wheels rolling at 6:20
Gathering Location: Holladay Park Lloyd Center at the center of the park.
Route: 5 miles through the interior of Portland crossing the Broadway Bridge and Morrison Bridge. Link to route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4317090

Post ride gathering: RonToms – 600 E Burnside

My personal note about about this ride is simple: If you haven’t been involved, get involved now before it’s someone who you know that’s been struck down. It’s a simple non-confrontational ride that makes a big statement.

Big turnout for Williams Ave project open house

When you mix an important project with

you get a great turnout.

The open house for PBOT’s North Williams Avenue Traffic Safety Operations Project drew a large crowd to the Immaculate Heart Catholic Church on Saturday. The event was the first time the public got a chance to see how PBOT and their Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC) would tackle the traffic issues on this vital neighborhood street that has become the second busiest bikeway in the entire city.

has spurred bicycle activism.

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this week:

You have to make transit cool, says the organizer of a program in an exurban office park in San Ramon, California where a third of 30,000 workers choose not to drive to work.

– A new study is the latest to raise serious concerns about the health effects of spending time near freeways — in this case, the resulting pollution may cause brain damage.

– An update on the case of the man who allegedly attacked a Critical Mass ride in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and a look at efforts to improve the town’s bicycle infrastructure.
