Video: Multnomah County’s Bike Patrol in action

As Portland Mercury reporter Sarah Mirk shared back in May, Multnomah County’s parole officers that work cases downtown now use bicycles for their regular patrols. Today the County unveiled an in-house video of the officers in action.

According to the County’s Community Justice District Manager Pat Schreiner, the bike patrols are a six month pilot program. To get the patrols started, the Portland Police Bureau donated bike training and certification for four parole officers.

Artcrank Portland is this Thursday: Get a peek at our poster!

The Artcrank Poster Show is coming to Portland this Thursday (10/7). The event, billed as a “Poster party for bike people,” was a big success when it came to town last year. This year we’re doubly excited for its arrival because we’ve got a poster of our own in the show.

The Artcrank concept is so simple it’s beautiful (both literally and figuratively). A bunch of talented artists share their bike-inspired work on the walls of the The Cleaners at Ace Hotel gallery space in downtown Portland. Proceeds from sales on the night of the show go to the artists and local non-profit Bikes to Rwanda. It’s an excellent opportunity to showcase (and support) local art and our shared love of bicycling all at once.

‘City of Bicycles’ book will examine Copenhagen bike culture

A new book coming from Copenhagen titled, City of Bicycles will take an in-depth look at that famous bike city’s culture. I’m really looking forward to this because most of what I know about Copenhagen is more of the infrastructure, policy and planning side of things.

‘City of Bicycles’ is due for release on October 28th and is published by Nyt Nordisk Forlag, Copenhagen, Denmark.

In Copenhagen everybody cycles. His Royal Highness Frederik, the Danish crown prince, can be spotted regularly riding his children around in a cargo bicycle, and it is completely normal to see politicians parking their bicycles outside the Parliament building, or a famous actor riding around town with shopping bags balancing on the handlebars.

Northwest Trail Alliance will hold demonstration ride in Forest Park

After expressing their disappointment with last week’s decision by City Commissioner Nick Fish to not grant any new or improved singletrack trail access for bikes in Forest Park, the Northwest Trail Alliance has announced a “Share The Park” ride.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 16th. According to the NWTA, it will be a rally and a group ride in Forest Park (on roads where riding is allowed of course) that is intended as a “peaceful action”.

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– National organization Bikes Belong is using some of its clout and funding to send U.S. city officials and planners to the Netherlands to bring home lessons in bicycle culture and infrastructure. A reporter followed one delegation and describes what he observed.

– In NYC, bicycling is apparently becoming fashionable among young, chic women, in part as a quaint accessory and in part as a way to stay in shape.

– A popular cross-country bicycle route is slated to become a major freight corridor, with 500,000lb (!) trucks delivering oil extraction equipment to Canada.
