Autumn is in the air and we’ve got a cornucopia of events for you this weekend to help you make the most of it. Apparently Thursday is the new Friday because once again the weekend fun starts early, and in this case, skips over Friday completely!
Thursday, October 7th
12:00pm-6:00pm: UBI Open House
Come celebrate the one year anniversary of the United Bicycle Institute’s Expansion to Portland with a “Bike-by” lube and open house at their North Portland location. The folks of UBI will be showing off their facilities and new frame building setup, and offering snacks and a free drive train cleaning and lube to visitors. UBI is located at 3961 N. Williams.
5:00pm-11:00pm: Artcrank Bicycle Poster Show
Featuring an amazing range of bicycle-inspired poster art, Artcrank shows pieces at the Cleaners at Ace Hotel space downtown and sells each of them for $30, benefiting the artists and Bikes to Rwanda. Of course, bikeportland.org is very excited to be unveiling its own poster at the event as well.
7:00pm: MJCC Loves Bicycling
Join the Mittleman Jewish Community Center for an evening with Mia Birk, Mark Ginsburg, and Linda Ginenthal discussing Portland’s bicycle progress, laws, and programs. The event will feature a raffle and signing of Birk’s new book, Joyride, Pedaling Toward a Healthier Planet. 6651 SW Capitol Hwy, $5 per family.
Saturday, October 9th
7:00am: Harvest Century
Ride a 45, 75, or 100 mile route through the beautiful autumn Oregon countryside in the 8th annual Harvest Century ride, presented by Shower’s Pass and benefiting Community Vision. This “last organized ride of the season” features supported rest stops, hot catered meals, and an after party with featuring Rogue Ales and local music favorites, Back Porch Revival. 8:45am: Heiser Farms Cyclocross
The perfect way to usher in the fall, visit Heiser Farms this weekend for hay rides, a corn maze, a bluegrass festival, and some down and dirty cyclocross. Races for all categories run throughout the day, registration is available online or day of race.
10:00am-6:00pm (and Sun. 10-5): Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show
The event custom bicycle lovers loose sleep over, the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show features exhibitions from 35 local custom builders as well as speakers and presentations on the business and culture of bicycles. Drool over new ideas and classic designs that will no doubt be coveted and copied world-wide. Sandbox Studio, 420 NE 9th Ave.
10:00am-12:00pm: NE/SE 50’s Bikeway Project Ride —-> Ride has been rescheduled due to rain. New date is Saturday 10/16.
Join the 50s Bikeway Project’s Citizen’s Advisory Committee as they tour and discuss bicycle facility design and planning options in the 50’s streets of Northeast and Southeast Portland. Ride meets at Park Elementary School, information on how to RSVP can be found here.
10:00am-1:00pm: Autumn Adventure Ride
Explore the multi-use paths of East Portland with the city of Portland’s Women on Bikes and Portland by Cycle programs in this free co-ed ride of about 25 miles. Ride meets at Lents Park on SE 92nd Avenue.
12:30pm-3:00pm: Awesome Architecture–Inner NoPo
Explore the unique and amazing architecture, alleys, and pedestrian bridges of inner North Portland in this group ride of about 8 miles. Ride meets at Mash Tun on NE Alberta and 22nd.
Sunday, October 10th
8:45am: Cross Crusade #2
The second in the infamous Cross Crusade cyclocross series, this weekend’s event takes place at Rainier High School in Rainier, OR. Watch or join races for all categories and a kiddie cross for the little ones. Registration and schedule information can be found here.
1:00pm-8:00pm: Roll against Coal
Greenpeace, the Oregon Sierra Club, Climate Solutions, Transition PDX and Youth Empowerment Action have teamed up to bring you a day of activism against coal dependence featuring a bicycle repair workshop, group ride, rally, and after party. Event takes place at the Sierra Club chapter at SE 18th and Ankeny.
