Ride Oregon: New website promotes bike tourism in Oregon

Screenshot from home page

The mission to make Oregon “The Land Bicycles Dream About” has taken a big step forward. A new website to promote biking in Oregon and to inspire people to get out and ride launched yesterday. Check it out at RideOregonRide.com.

The site was first pegged as a priority during a brainstorming session at the Oregon Bike Summit back in April of 2008. Since then, Travel Oregon has spearheaded an effort to make it happen. They formed a committee of local bike advocates and experts for guidance, hired interactive brand strategy agency Substance to build it, and invested the money to make it a reality.

For Travel Oregon, the site is a way to make biking a larger and more profitable component of Oregon’s $1 billion dollar outdoor tourism industry.

Popular used bike shop The Recyclery is leaving their current home in a Quonset hut on the corner of SE Madison and SE 7th and opening up at two other bike-friendly locations in the coming weeks.

I caught up with shop owner Robby Fenstermaker at their Madison location (they also have a small store in downtown Portland on SW 11th) yesterday to learn more about what’s going on.

Fenstermaker said he loves the SE Madison location, but its cavernous ceilings were impossible to heat in Portland’s icy winters. I asked if increased rents or other financial issues forced the move. “No” he said “it’s just really cold”. But if he has it his way, Fenstermaker might maintain a presence at this location. He’s talking with the landlord in hopes of occupying the building in the back (southern end) of the lot. That area currently houses the shop’s storage and repair facilities.

Blumenauer on Cash for Clunkers: A great concept, poorly executed

Portland yesterday.

The Obama Administration’s Cash for Clunkers program has caused a lot of confusion and a bit of outrage among bicycle and sustainable transportation advocates. For politicians devoted to the environment and sensible transportation choices, it has meant tough decisions.

Started as a way to kickstart the economy and improve the fuel efficiency of the nation’s auto fleet, the program has driven thousands of people to deserted auto dealers. The program has been so popular that it has run out of cash. The U.S. House of Representatives voted to add an additional $2 billion of emergency funding to the program and the Senate is expected to vote on it this week.

U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer was the guest of honor at a fundraising event held in North Portland last night. Bike industry and advocacy bigwigs from across the country joined a host of local bike luminaries to thank the Congressman for his dedication to bike issues on Capitol Hill.

The event began with a four-mile bike ride from the headquarters of Cycle Oregon on N. Flint. The ride went down to the Esplanade via the Rose Quarter and stopped at the west end of the Hawthorne Bridge for a few remarks by Blumenauer before heading back up Williams.

MTB riding area near Portland closed due to fire danger: Advocates urge compliance

Riding in Scappoose is in jeopardy
if fire closures are not honored.
(Photo: jordan_n22/Flickr)

A popular mountain bike trail riding area in Scappoose, a town just 20 miles north of Portland, has been closed due to high fire season brought on by recent record-setting heat. The closure affects hundreds of thousands of acres of private forest land in Oregon and Washington and the timber company that owns the land is threatening to make the closure permanent if the violations of the closure continue.

Bike traffic in Portland-8.jpg

at SE Grand Ave.

Bike traffic in Portland seems to be at an all-time high this year. A few weeks back I shared a glimpse of bike traffic in N. Williams and I’ve been amazed at what I’ve seen in other areas as well. I can’t wait for the results of the City of Portland’s annual bike counts, especially if they show we’ve continued our current rate of increase (bridge bike traffic was up 28% last year).

This morning I got an email from reader Mike Wright. Mike is a 39-year old business analyst who lives in the Richmond Neighborhood near SE 42nd and Taggart. He rides over the Hawthorne Bridge everyday. Here’s how he described the scene as he rolled up to the intersection of SE 6th and Hawthorne at about 7:30 am this morning:
