Hello, beautiful Fall cyclists! Guess what – I’m going to take us on a new route! (Winks at Katie and Bob.) I figured it was about time . . .

Hey, are you interested in going for a safe, mellow, family-friendly ride through a few (mostly) S.E. Portland neighborhoods on Friday, September 28th, and (hopefully) spreading a little joy and bikey good will along the way? Bubble machines and kidlets are *very* welcome!!! Let’s meet up outside of Palio on the big circle in Ladd’s Addition starting at 5:45 p.m., and kick off *promptly* at 6:15 p.m. If you want to show your Autumn colors, or wear feathers in your hair, you go for it – whatever makes you happy! Come on out and celebrate Fall! :o)

If you have any questions, or some new and exciting route suggestions, please let me know! If you’re up for a bit of trouble, well, I’m sure you have other options. ;o) Thanks!

An interview with City Council hopeful Chris Smith

As I reported earlier this week, transportation and neighborhood activist Chris Smith has officially announced his candidacy for Portland City Council.

In case you hadn’t noticed, I plan to cover the upcoming political maneuvering as closely as possible. Not only do I think city politics will play a major role in the future of bicycles and transportation in Portland, but, as we learned back in April, the bike community must stay engaged with the plays and players in City Hall.

On that note, below is my interview with Chris Smith. I hope it gives you a better sense of who he is, what he stands for, and why I think it’s important for us all to pay close attention to the upcoming shifts in Portland’s political landscape.

Discussion with John Pucher

University of Rutgers Professor John Pucher will be giving a brown bag presentation at Portland State University this Friday on the topic of Promoting Safe Walking and Cycling to Improve Public Health: Lessons from Europe.

Dr. Pucher has researched and written extensively about bicycling around the world including:

* Comparative analysis of urban transport systems and travel behavior in the USA, Europe, and Canada.
* Urban transport in China and India.
* How to promote safe walking and cycling in the USA on the basis of successful policies in Canada and Europe.
* Public health impacts of land use and transportation policies.
* Transportation impacts of economic transformations in formerly socialist countries of Central Europe.
* Multi-modal coordination of public transport services and fares throughout metropolitan areas and integration of non-motorized modes (bicycling and walking) into the overall urban transport system.

PDOT releases latest bike count report

The City of Portland Office of Transportation has just released their 21-page report detailing results of their 2007 bicycle counts (PDF here).

The report includes graphs and charts that reflect PDOT’s most comprehensive counting effort to date. This year, PDOT expanded its counts beyond the 60 locations done in 2006 to include a total of 98 sites.

As expected, their counts show a large increase in the amount of people riding bicycles in Portland.

Freak bikes, minis will take part in Oregon Handmade Bike Show

Coming up in November is the first-ever Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show. Among the 25 vendors are some of Oregon’s most talented bicycle craftsmen.

Several well-known custom bike makers from Portland will be exhibiting. But in addition to the usual suspects, and in a nod to Portland’s distinct brand of bike building, the show will also feature builders known for a different kind of custom bike; minis and freak bikes.

Yes, alongside $3,000, meticulously crafted frames made to exacting tolerances will be bike creations culled from local dumpsters, then welded and bolted together by the DIY genius of Zoobombers and members of the Dropout Bike Club.
