The Portland Police Bureau’s Major Crash Team responded to a serious injury collision involving a bicyclist at around 5:00pm tonight out on NE Marine Drive near the Portland Airport.
1999 model, mountain bike, large if not 21″ frame (not sure what the size was), in fantastic shape for its age. had front and rear lights, also, a narrow street slick on the front, knobby on the back.

No, not those clydesdales. I’m talking about bike racers. Big bike racers (well, big in bike racer terms at least.)
In an effort to balance out field sizes, Cross Crusade chief Brad Ross announced on Sunday that this weekend’s race will feature a “Clydesdale” category, open only to riders that weigh 200 pounds or more.
Racer Tim Schauer has given this some thought and according to scientific calculations he posted to the OBRA email list, he thinks the Cyldesdale category should do the least amount of laps possible, “because we work more per lap than the less gravity burdened.”
Here’s his logic:
Our old friend Mary Peters, the U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary who said bicycle paths aren’t transportation infrastructure, earned the rebuke of the League of American Bicyclists, than tried to make good with a verbose explanation, recently paid our region a visit.
The Portland Office of Transportation is organizing a bike light parade to increase awareness of the importance of being visible while riding at night. The parade officially kicks off the second year of the their “See & Be Seen” campaign.
The See & Be Seen Bike Light Parade is slated for November 15th at 6:00pm. The short parade will take place downtown and will go from the North Park Blocks to Portland State University.
Last year’s ride began at the Community Cycling Center and traversed Northeast Alberta area neighborhoods.

If you’ve never volunteered to ride with kids as part of the BTA’s Bike Safety Education program, now is the time to step up. Or, if you’ve already done it, why not do it again?
The BTA needs volunteers to ride with students on their graduation bike rides. All you’ve got to do is show up, model proper riding techniques, and be supportive and enthusiastic (an instructor will also be present).
I’ve done this several times and it always reminds me that bikes are fun, kids are silly, and that it’s imperative to teach young folks how to be safe and smart cyclists.

A bicyclist died after he struck a telephone pole while riding on the sidewalk near Belmont and 34th in southeast Portland.
The incident occurred on October 1st and according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim (who was homeless) succumbed to head injuries on October 8th. He was not wearing a helmet.
*Since his family has not been found, his identity remains unknown. The Oregonian reports that the victim was 45 year-old Curtis Lee Web.
