Oregonian reports on bicyclists disrupting traffic

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Just noticed this entry on the Oregonian’s Breaking News blog,

“About a dozen bicyclists blocked traffic about 9 to 9:30 this morning on inner east side commuter streets, then onto the Morrison Bridge westbound. They moved slowly across all lanes as cars backed up behind them, including a police car. This continued for the length of the bridge until the cyclists veered right toward Old Town.”

I don’t know anything about it. Someone care to share some info?

UPDATE: (11:56am) More details have been added to the story. The Oregonian reports that the police say several of cyclists have been cited (including one arrest due to an outstanding warrant). Also,

“Police did not rule out the possibility that the bicyclists were getting an early start on the May Day rally and march scheduled for this afternoon in downtown.”

The BTA is ramping up their Bicycle Safety Education Program and they’re teaching hundreds of 4th-7th graders throughout Portland how to become better bikers.

The last lesson in their 10-hour training program is to take the kids on a community ride through the streets around their school. As you can imagine, riding on city streets with 30 young kids in tow, takes a bit of extra care. That’s why the BTA needs ride leaders to volunteer and help instructors on these rides.

A reader sent me an article about wind tunnel testing that ran in Saturday’s Wall Street Journal (not available online). According to the story, wind tunnels, which used to be the exclusive domain of elite professionals, are being used more and more by amateur cyclists to gain an edge in competition.

Funding cut is opportunity for activism

City Hall Bike Show and Art Exhibition

Portland City Hall

From a community fund drive to a rally at City Hall, there has been a wide range of reactions to the Mayor’s decision to cut funding for Portland’s Bicycle Master Plan.

On top of the list is tomorrow’s Bicycle Master Plan ride. This ride, which meets across the street from City Hall, will be led by city bike coordinator Roger Geller.

The ride is slated to explore North Portland, but given the events of the past week I wouldn’t be surprised if it made a few loops down SW 4th Ave. (in front of City Hall).
