Bicyclist dies after hitting telephone pole

A bicyclist died after he struck a telephone pole while riding on the sidewalk near Belmont and 34th in southeast Portland.
The incident occurred on October 1st and according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim (who was homeless) succumbed to head injuries on October 8th. He was not wearing a helmet.
*Since his family has not been found, his identity remains unknown. The Oregonian reports that the victim was 45 year-old Curtis Lee Web.
OMSI installs new bike parking
An attentive tipster has sent me some photos of new bike parking at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (which is directly accessible from the Eastbank Esplanade).

US Gran Prix of Cyclocross coming to Portland
In December, the nation’s best cyclocross racers, along with a huge contingent from the bike industry, will descend on Portland International Raceway (PIR) for the final stop in the six-race US Gran Prix of Cyclocross.
The “Portland Cup”, which is (surprisingly) being partially sponsored by the Portland Office of Transportation, is likely to crown the 2007 USGP ‘cross champion.
Race Director Brad Ross says they’ll use the same course from the 2004 National Championships that were also held at PIR. He adds that,

PORTLAND, Oregon – Spend the evening of Thursday, November 1 in St. Johns to benefit the North Portland Tool Library. Start with a bicycle ride to St Johns cemeteries to honor Dia de los Muertos. Next, sit down to dinner at Ladybug Café, Proper Eats or other restaurants in downtown St Johns. End the evening with a movie at the St. Johns Cinema. North Portland Tool Library’s spooky fund raiser encourages people to “wear a costume if you dare.”
Created this year as the First Annual “Night in St. Johns”, members of the Tool Library advisory board are excited about the many fun possibilities for an annual event. Proper Eats, Lady Bug Café and other restaurants in St. Johns are donating 10% of their proceeds of the evening to the North Portland Tool Library. Movies at the St. Johns Cinema will charge $10 on November 1 for evening shows and donate $4 to the North Portland based non-profit.
The spooky bicycle ride to area cemeteries is being organized by Laura Dalton, carpenter and Tool Library board member who lives in St. Johns. The family-friendly ride starts at 4:00 pm at Weir’s Cyclery in St. Johns, the bike ride will follow a knot route to cemeteries and “scary places” in the St. Johns area. Stops on the ride include visiting the final resting place of James John (St Johns’ founder) at the Columbian Cemetery and the lone gravesite of pioneer farmer, Fred Ramsey. “We will pay the old boy a visit, light a candle, leave some flowers, maybe a bit of whiskey,” says Dalton of the Ramsey site.
The North Portland Tool Library (NPTL) is a community resource dedicated to building community and fostering sustainability by providing residents with tools and the power to use them.
NPTL is looking for volunteers to help with the evening’s events. Graphic design, putting up flyers and volunteers for tabling are all needed. Adams makes decision on E. Burnside-Couch bike access

Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams recently made a decision on how to deal with bicycle traffic when E. Burnside and Couch Streets are re-constructed for PDOT’s East Burnside/Couch Couplet Project.
According to PDOT, the project, “will serve as a catalyst for…redevelopment and business growth,” and the two streets, “will be realigned into a one-way couplet system, with eastbound traffic in three lanes on Burnside Street and westbound traffic in two lanes on Couch Street.”

Memorial service planned for Tracey Sparling

Salem newspaper, the Statesman Journal has details about the memorial service planned for Tracey Sparling.
“Her family will hold the event Thursday afternoon at the First Church of the Nazarene. Invited guests will speak about Tracey and a short reception will be held afterward, family members said.”
The paper also has details about a memorial fund:
Memorial contributions can be made in Tracey Sparling’s name to fund West Salem High School yearbook activities or scholarships. Contributions can be made out to West Salem High School Business Office Bookkeeper, 2650 Orchard Heights Road NW, Salem.
Sparling was a graduate of South West Salem High’s class of 2006.
