Portland messengers fared well at the North American Cycle Courier Championships (NACCC) this past weekend in San Francisco.

Local track racer and messenger Zak Kovalicik took home the coveted “Fixie King” crown for having the fasted fixed gear finish in the main race (and he did it on a locally made Ira Ryan track bike).

According to reader Bjorn Warloe, who attended the event, it was Kovalicik’s second time as fastest fixie rider.

House Bill 3314 — which would create a new offense for anyone who inflicts serious injury or death upon a “vulnerable user” of a public way — passed the Senate Judiciary Committee today and is now one final vote away from becoming Oregon law.

The bill passed the House two weeks ago and after its recommendation from Committee today, it will move onto a full Senate vote. BTA lobbyist Scott Bricker and Portland bike lawyer Ray Thomas have worked hard to get the bill to this point.

There’s nothing like a three-day weekend to get the summer bike fun flowing.

On Sunday, the girls and I joined about 15 other folks for a ride out to Sauvie Island for the second annual Strawberry Ride organized by Dat Nguyen.

We rode from north Portland, along Willamette Blvd., and then took a lane on the St. Johns Bridge on our way out to the Island.

Once we got to Kruger Farms we were ready to pick. I tracked down Don Kruger (photo) to tell him how much I liked his farm and how much I appreciate him opening it up to cyclocross racing in the fall. Don is the nicest guy you’ll ever meet and he loves having cyclists out on the farm. I even noticed he has added more bike racks.

With a long weekend coming up, I can’t bear to leave that CafePress story front and center.

I hope you don’t mind, but I can’t resist sharing these photos of my four year-old daughter Eleni. On our way home from the Three Bridges celebration last weekend, Eleni hopped aboard a friend’s tandem. She was so excited to be up there, speeding along the Esplanade with her feet strapped in.

She smiled like I’ve never seen her smile before. The pictures tell the rest of the story:

The League of American Bicyclists is leading a charge to voice complaints about anti-cyclist products being sold at popular web product retailer CafePress.

Here’s the message being sent around by the League’s Advocacy Coordinator Lou Elin Dwyer:

“Please go to the address below and see the violence being promoted against bicyclists by CaféPress through stickers, t-shirts and coffee mugs.

The message: “I don’t share the road,” accompanies a car striking a bicyclist. There are others here.
