Meet Your Maker: Illustrator Tomas Quinones

Tomas Quinones at BikeCraft.

Every year at BikeCraft there’s one vendor that really raises my eyebrows and makes me think, “Wow, we’re seeing the launch of someone’s career! This is exciting!” This year I felt like that person was Tomas Quinones.

Out of nowhere (at least to me), Tomas launched Flying Snail Creations, a new company to publish his original illustrations. The product he brought to BikeCraft was “Bike Parade” — a kids coloring book full of animals pedaling whimsical bicycles. After buying one myself and seeing my girls devour it with crayons (which he very smartly sold too), I knew this book would be a hit. Turns out it was.

Regional projects awarded over $16 million in federal grants

The Tonquin Trail was awarded over $5 million.

Last week the Portland Bike Sharing Project stole the limelight as Metro’s Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Transportation (JPACT) voted on a package of projects to receive the 2014-15 allocation of federal “regional flexible funding“.

As per a hard-fought compromise, 75% of the $23 million in project funding was targeted for active transportation projects (freight got the other 25%) throughout the metro region.

The total amount was about $16.5 million. So, what other projects made the cut? Below is a breakdown:

Worth a closer look.

I don’t know about you, but every so often I come across a parked bike that makes me stop in my tracks for a closer look. Whether it’s a vintage steed worthy of a museum collection, or a quirky customized freak bike that’s truly one-of-a-kind, these bikes deserve to be shared.

That’s the inspiration behind Locked Up, a new column that will showcase interesting bikes we see parked throughout Portland.

New study compares bicycling’s CO2 emissions to other modes

Cover of ECF study

A new study by the European Cyclists Federation (ECF) offers an in-depth comparison between the CO2 emissions of bicycling versus other modes of transportation. The new study is aimed at encouraging policy makers to make bicycle promotion a larger part of their greenhouse gas emission reduction toolkit.

What makes the study interesting (and useful for settling debates) is that it took into account not just the emissions from the vehicles themselves, but from the entire life cycle of the mode including production, maintenance and fuel — which in the case of bicycling includes caloric intake.

The Community Cycling Center held their 16th annual Holiday Bike Drive yesterday. The event connected over 400 kids from low-income families with a newly refurbished bike, a helmet, basic safety education and most importantly, the freedom and sheer joy that comes with having your own two wheels.

We weren’t at the event this year, but the CCC shared a few photos of the happy kids (taken by Britt Appleton):

Feeling congested?
Take a bike and call me in the morning.

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– The City of Sherwood, located 17 miles southwest of Portland, has seen a 22% reduction in crashes after installing red light cameras at the intersection of Highway 99 and Tualatin-Sherwood Road. Nearly three quarters of the the citations resulting from the cameras were to people making a right-turn at a red light without stopping their motor vehicle, a significant hazard to people on bicycles.
