Grab your tweed and your steed because the Tweed Ride is coming to Portland. The date has been set for January 30th.
Portlander Jocelyn Gaudi is organizing the ride. She says it will include tea time and a civilized lunch. The ride won’t cost you anything and wearing tweed isn’t mandatory, “but dressing dapper is highly encouraged” says Gaudi.
The tweed ride phenomenon started in London early this year and the idea quickly spread. In the past year, Eugene, Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington D.C. have already followed suit.
Now Portlanders, who of course never miss an opportunity to dress up for a ride, will get a chance to join in the fun.
Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, for an excellent slideshow of the D.C. Tweed Ride, check out this story on NPR.

While I was in DC last week – DC riders just completed their first tweed ride. They had much fun. It seemed a new concept to them.
Though I do have to say there was been a lot of tweed in the saddle here in Portland for many years vs. most other US cities. It just fits the weather and utilitarian riding style.
Get ready to get dapper! We’re so excited to be putting together this ride. Let’s bring a little style back to the ride. Way to go, Jocey!
I’m SO doing this! I’m actually shopping online right now for a coat pattern that will work in tweed–and on a bike.
Yay! I’ve been wondering when we would get one of these in town. Need to get my dapper gear together!
Can we drink tea wearing tweed while on the ride? That seems to be the way I get to work lately.
Add Eugene to that list of places who have held Tweed Rides:

I’m in!
Last time I checked, tweed and styrofoam was not considered a dapper combo. There is a certain disconnect to promoting how civilized bicycle travel can be, but requiring crash helmets.
this ride will help.
Time to polish up Ye Olde Raleigh and squeeze into my pleated wool skirt! Woohoo!
Is the ride helmet-required? I didn’t see that in the text.
Philadelphia had some Tweed going on…

I’m extra pumped for this one, good timing too. Portland Bicycle Tours will do free bike loan for anyone who needs to borrow a steed or helmet.
Dave, usually only rides with a participation fee (races and other events) require a helmet, and then primarily as a requirement of the insurance policy purchased by the ride organizers, given the increased liability risk with such events.
Ye gads! Skullduggery and haberdashery all in one rolling perambulation?
Such lofty decisions to follow, shall I ‘sport about’ in breeks, plus fours, pantaloons, breeches, jodpurs?
Now where is my deerstalker?
I guess for a ‘helmet’ one could wear a pith helmet or horsemen’s helmet – for the sake of fashion head gear.
I am so excited. I’ll have to make the xtracycle sidebags a little more tweed-friendly, and break out the ol’ wool pleated skirt, but…
Just returned from Los Angeles. Their Tweed Ride was last Saturday. They were leaving from historic Union Station as we arrived to walk Olvera Street.
so what time are you guys thinking? the 2nd annual KBOO square dance is that night at the tabor theatre from 7 to 10, and I would love to make both 🙂
Congrats Chaps!
We’re delighted to hear our sister city will be riding in style shortly, if only the penny fakething could get me there….
oh well, perhaps we’ll see some of you when we start our rides in spring?
most graciously yours,
