This weekend, a celebration of bikes and beer at Biketobeerfest

Bikes and beer will be celebrated in true Portland style this weekend at Biketobeerfest, a carfree event being thrown by Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB). The event is Saturday, September 19th, from noon to 10pm. And it’s totally free and open to the public.
There’s one catch — the event is carfree. There will be plenty of bike parking right outside the entrance, but no car parking. The block of SE 29th next to the bar will be carfree. And attendees are asked not to arrive by car.
The program is up on the website, and it looks great — performances by local bands including March Fourth Marching Band, a performance by iconic Portland mini bike dance troupe the Sprockettes, roller races, tons of activities for kids, a BMX trick riding exhibition, something called the “Huffy Huck Off,” a handbuilt bicycle show and tell, and a rodeo just for bike shop workers.
Hopworks will also be premiering two beers brewed especially for the occasion.
We’ll be there, hosting a mini BikeCraft fair, with a double handful of some of the best local bike-oriented crafters and artists. I’ll be posting in the next couple of days about the amazing, handmade biked-out goods that we’ll have there.

The event was originally set to be called Biketoberfest, but a trademark issue influenced organizers to change the name.
HUB, which has been open at SE 29th and Powell since 2008, has focused on bikes since its inception, wooing bicycling clientele with plenty of bike parking, decor made out of used bike parts, spare tubes available behind the bar, and sponsorship of local bike causes and teams.

Thanks for the write-up, Elly! It's shaping up to be a very cool event. If you work at a bike shop (you don't have to be a mechanic), sign up for the Bike Shop Challenge Rodeo and put your velo mettle to the test.
Hopworks has done a great job of making this a high energy, low waste, super-cool free event.

First pints on us!
Come wrench on the bikes we use to teach elementary school kids Bike Safety in Portland.
Our warehouse, 10am - 2pm on Saturday 9/19. We'll give you a HUB pint glass, the warm-fuzzy feeling of doing good work and the first beer on us. (Limited to the first 8 RSVP's)

Powell is a terrible street to cycle on.

No need to ride your bike ON POWELL. There are plenty of options and we'll have police out there to assist with street crossings. Choose a route that's comfortable for you.
We like ByCycle.org, the bike route-finding tool, for suggestions, but only go with the route you think is best for your comfort level. Riding/walking on the sidewalk respectfully for a block or two is perfectly acceptable!

@12: Ayleen, I wish you guys would sling out my custom Google map of routes to Hopworks. bycycle.org makes a couple mistakes: coming from the north it has people cross Powell at 29th instead of either the light at 26th or the crosswalk at 28th. From the south, it has people ride west on Powell to 29th -- ridiculous, especially for amateurs or groups.
