To Portland’s bike insiders, savvy advocates, BTA members, and regular readers of this site, the Bicycle Master Plan Update process is nothing new. We’ve been getting excited about it for months. There have been brown bag discussions, monthly rides, steering committee meetings, a lot of coverage on this site, and so on.
But the same might not be true of the Mayor’s office.
(Note: The title of this post was originally, “Benefits fraud may stymie progress on Bike Commuter Act.” I changed it to better reflect the situation.).
I just got an email from Congressman Earl Blumenauer’s legislative assistant Katie Drennan. She said that although there is considerable momentum for the Bike Commuter Act (42 co-sponsors so far), there’s a situation brewing on the Hill that might cause a bump in the road.
Next week, we have an opportunity to show the Mayor that the Bicycle Master Plan Update is much more than just another planning process.
On Tuesday (5/1), City Bike Coordinator Roger Geller will lead the fourth in his series of Bicycle Master Plan Rides.
Geller has said that by this Summer, he hopes to have 1,000 people join him. Let’s help him reach that goal by next week. Do you think we can do it?
Word from the Mayor’s office is that he will have a statement on his decision to cut funding for the Bicycle Master Plan by the end of the week.
Stay tuned.
