Passing cyclist saves man’s life, makes plea for helmet use
I received an amazing Close Call report yesterday:
I was driving down NE 28th today and as I was passing Fred Meyers, noticed someone laying in the gutter on the corner. I stopped to help. What I understand, was that a cyclist headed north on 28th had been clipped at relatively low speed by a driver turning left into Fred Meyers. Unfortunately, his hat didn’t protect him very well, and he appeared to have sustained a severe head injury (read: not really breathing when I arrived). Another bystander and myself got his airway open, and he was still alive when the ambulance drove off.

Comment of the Week: 10-3-06
We must face the fact that “Biking is FUN!” is tired and won’t get people out of their plush SUVs on a cold February day. But shame might. National pride might. Being praised as a patriot might.”
I get such great comments on this site that I thought it would be fun to highlight one of them each week. And to show how much I appreciate them, I’ll give away a set of my postcards and stickers to the winner.
I hope this new contest encourages more good comments. What makes a good comment you ask? I like comments that are on-topic, concise (they don’t have to be long to be good), thought-out, clear, and that add insight, humor, or key information to the original post.

Eugene summit to kick-off to new bike/ped plan

The City of Eugene Transportation Department is kicking of their new strategic pedestrian and bicycle planning process by hosting a Walking and Biking Summit on Saturday (10/7).
City planners hope to rally the troops and boost the bikey morale with the half-day summit. Similar to the Portland Bike Summit held earlier this year, workshops are planned on topics including bike tourism, industry, sharing the road and how to be an effective advocate.
Despite their bikey reputation, Eugene is currently ranked only as a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. According to Sue Wolling of the Eugene Bike Coalition, they can do better.
PDC wants bike builders show in Portland

The PDC wants to bring the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) to Portland. Reps from the PDC, Commissioner Sam’s office and the Portland Oregon Visitor’s Association met with the founder and director of the show, Don Walker at Interbike in Las Vegas last week.
The fledgling show features the nation’s most sought-after artisan and custom bike builders and in just two years it has become an established and successful event within the national bike scene. The show is currently based in San Jose but Walker is apparently open to the idea of making it a travelling show.

Everyone knows about carpooling, but what about a bikepool?
Transportation activist and BikePortland.org contributor Elly Blue thought it would be fun to start one, so for the last three Monday mornings she has invited folks to join her on her morning commute from Southeast Portland into downtown.
Elly says she thought it would be fun to try out carpooling by bike, “as a way to break up the monotony of going downtown, meet people, and reach out to new cyclists.”
