The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) hosted a party in the Rose Quarter Wednesday night to congratulate riders and celebrate another successful Bike Commute Challenge. In the month of September, the event’s 11,745 participants (split into 1,395 teams) logged 1,278,343 miles while riding their bikes to and from work (those numbers are down slightly from 2011, see all results here).

At the party Wednesday night, participants were treated to free pizza, beer, and a big prize raffle. The BTA also awarded individuals for exemplary commuting and teams got to see where they stacked up against the competition. Teams are made up of employees from businesses and organizations across Oregon (split into three categories and then separated by number of employees). The challenge is to get the highest percentage of employees logging trips (it’s not based on total miles).[Read more…]

At a packed party in the Central Eastside last night, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance announced results and gave out awards for winners of their annual Bike Commute Challenge. The month-long event that took place in September pitted businesses against each other in a friendly competition to see who could log the most trips to work by bike. Companies and non-profits competed in categories based on number of employees and other factors.[Read more…]

If you’ve noticed that the roads are a bit more full of bikes than usual, it’s because the BTA’s Bike Commute Challenge is underway. The month-long event is in its 16th year and if last year’s record-breaking participation is any indicator, there are likely to be several thousand brand new bike commuters on the roads.

The Challenge is a friendly competition between workplaces to see who can log the most trips by bike. There are over 1,100 teams and nearly 8,000 individuals currently logging trips on the website. Once logged in, you can log your trips and even set up head-to-head competitions. Teams are separated into a number of categories based on size and other factors (like non-profits, public agencies, and so on). After results are tallied, the BTA hosts a big and awesome party to celebrate (read our report and photos from last year’s event).

Last year, riders logged over 1.2 million miles. One-third of the way through this month, riders have logged 262,624 miles.

Today is the last day of the BTA’s 13th annual Bike Commute Challenge.

The event, which is a friendly competition between businesses to see whose employees can complete the most bike trips in the month of September, broke records across the board this year. In fact, the popularity of the event caught the BTA a bit off-guard, causing their server to crash throughout the month as participants logged in to tally up their miles.
