In a big move that will impact bike sharing in the United States and beyond, Portland-based Alta Bicycle Share has announced a new “strategic partnership” with 8D Technologies.
8D is the company that formerly worked closely with the Public Bicycle System Company (PBSC, a.k.a. Bixi), the Montreal based company that filed for bankruptcy late last month. Alta uses the PBSC platform in the many bike share systems they operate and manage around the country and some of those systems (in Boston and Washington D.C.) are operated with software developed by 8D Technologies.
But the relationship between 8D and PBSC soured when PBSC began to export their successful Bixi system to the U.S. while allegedly secretly developing their own software and cutting 8D out of the picture. In April 2012 8D sued PBSC for breach of contract.

There’s a new bike event promotion company in town: Axiom Event Productions. While their name isn’t familiar, you surely know about their biggest client so far — the City of Portland’s Sunday Parkways events.
Axiom was conceived last fall by a veteran of the local bike scene, Neal Armstrong. You might recall Armstrong for his work as event and volunteer manager at the non-profit Community Cycling Center that earned him the Skidmore Prize in 2007. After his stint at the CCC, Armstrong spent over four years with Good Sport Promotion, a well-known local company that puts on popular events like the Worst Day of the Year Ride, Tour de Lab, Portland Century, and others.

Last night my family and I had the opportunity to preview the Cycle City: A Spin on Bikes exhibit that opens today at the Portland Children’s Museum up in Washington Park.
The exhibit marks a milestone for the museum as it’s the first of their rotating exhibits they actually dreamed up and built themselves (instead of simply purchasing something turn-key). It says a lot about both the museum’s leadership/staff and about Portland culture in general that, when given the first opportunity to create their own exhibit, they decided it should have a bicycle theme.
