The Community Cycling Center is a nonprofit organization with a mission to broaden access to bicycling and its benefits.
Our vision is to help build a vibrant community where people of all backgrounds use bicycles to stay healthy and connected. We believe that all Portlanders—regardless of income or background—should have the opportunity to experience the joy, freedom and health benefits of bicycling.
In addition to delivering dynamic programs that benefit underserved communities, we operate a full-service bike shop in NE Portland that is staffed by highly experienced mechanics from diverse cycling backgrounds. Our programs and shop services combined help riders build their skills and confidence; empower young people to ride to school and adults to ride to work; offer educational opportunities for teens to earn school credit; and support everyone in riding for health and recreation. We also collaborate with numerous community partners to generate pathways to employment and engagement within the growing bicycle movement by training new educators, leaders, advocates and mechanics.

JOB SUMMARY
The Program Mechanic is a mechanic who will work primarily with the Programs team to prepare and deliver our community programs. The Program Mechanic will use mechanic skills, teaching skills, facilitation skills, and communication skills to support various programs. They will be using classroom management to deliver classes to high school students, lead groups of 4th-7th graders in bike safety and riding protocol, support summer bike camps, assist community members in free bike repair and support at our community-based satellite shop, annual bike give-aways, community rides, and special events. When not out delivering programs, the Program Mechanic will work from our bike shop on 1700 NE Alberta St.
The Program Mechanic will work to consistently and efficiently deliver on the demands presented by programming efforts, partners, and customers. This position will require technical proficiency with bikes, familiarity with bicycle-based programming, the ability to multitask, and to act as an ambassador for the Community Cycling Center.
This position requires work on weekends and hours outside of a 9 to 5 work day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Please note that the percentage indicators below represent an estimate of how much time each week will be spent fulfilling these functions. In terms of importance, all areas are valued equally.

September-December:
Co-Instruct STEM Bicycle Classes: 40%
Travel of offsite partner schools to deliver a science-based bicycle mechanic curriculum to alternative school and youth correctional facility students with a co-instructor. This includes prep for classes, transporting materials, classroom management, mediation and conflict resolution, and creating a supportive and student centered learning environment.
Lead After School Bike Clubs: 20%
Co-instruct an afterschool club for 4th-7th graders that entails teaching safe on-street bicycle riding, team building, route planning, and cooperation.
Holiday Bike Drive Giveaway: 40%
Overhaul kids bikes and work with volunteers to overhaul kids bikes for a large give away event in December. Tracking bike production, collecting bikes for repair, work with Volunteer and Intern Coordinator to meet volunteer needs and production goals, transport of bikes, and attend the December Holiday Bike Drive Event.
December-May:
Co-Instruct STEM Bicycle Classes: 40%
Instruct our in-shop Mechanic Intensive for High school students 20%
Classroom management, mechanic support, and hands-off teaching to 8 teens for a full week at the shop location.
Holiday Bike Drive Prep: 20%
Salvage Sunday: 20%
Tear down bicycles, collect parts, and sort recycling with volunteers and staff on Sundays at the shop location.
Other duties as assigned: 20%
May-August:
Perform Camp Checks at the Shop: 40%
Perform schedule 20 minute safety check on bikes for youth who will attend week long Bike Camps during summer months.
Working at the Bike Hub – offsite satellite shop: 40%
Work with community members and staff at a satellite bike shop to fix bicycles, assist community members in fixing bicycles, delivering an earn-a-bike program, hold events, support rides, and transport parts and supplies to the shop.
Salvage Sunday: 20%
*Other duties such as fundraising, some singular events, and shop work as duties allow.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support instructional staff in the community and at the shop with mechanics-focused educational projects
• Maintain our fleet of bikes used for community rides and build bikes for earn-a-bike programs
• Work directly with adults and youth to provide mechanical and riding instruction
• Assist the bike shop in meeting their goals when not on programs assignment
• Moving and lifting bicycles up to 50 lbs. is a regular part of this job, however, reasonable accommodation can be made.
• Support fundraising efforts when asked. This is an essential part of every one’s job
• Be a public supporter of the Community Cycling Center and represent the organization with positivity and consistency
• Be an active advocate for program participants and a steward of the relationships between community partners and the Community Cycling Center
• Meet qualitative and quantitative production goals in the shop.
QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS
REQUIRED
• 2+ years of bike shop experience assembling and repairing bicycles
• 1+ years or 2 seasons of experience in education programming with adults and children from diverse backgrounds and/or people experiencing poverty
• 2+ years of direct teaching experience
• Consistent attention to quality and detail
• Ability to meet quantitative production goals as outlined by shop management
• Effective communication
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment as well as independently
• Commitment to and respect for equity, sustainability, and diversity
• Experience building trusting, healthy relationships with marginalized youth
• Valid Oregon Driver’s License
• Criminal background check will be required once hired
• Valid CPR/First Aid certification required prior to the first day of training (or whenever makes sense for this position)
• Some job duties require riding a bicycle
PREFERRED
• Proficiency in Spanish
• Familiarity with Lightspeed OS
• Experience driving a 20” box truck
• Exemplifies compassion and understanding around the barriers to learning such as houselessness, parenting, incarceration, gang affiliation, and post-traumatic stress, and various learning disabilities through training or lived experience
COMPENSATION
• Hourly wage $15-17/hour depending on experience
• Heath and dental insurance, paid Time Off & sick leave, $200 annual Used Parts Allowance, $90 annual shop service allowance. Also cost +10% pricing on new parts.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation will begin work next week on what they’re (smartly) calling an “update” to Northeast Glisan Street east of I-205 to the city limits.

We’ve sung the praises of Stub Stewart State Park on this site several times in the past. It’s not only a great bike-camping destination from Portland (a MAX ride will put you about 13 miles away from a carfree path that leads to the park entrance), it also makes a perfect base camp for miles of excellent roads and trails.
Senate Democrats learned what mayors are doing to combat climate change during the first meeting of their Special Committee on the Climate Crisis held today on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler was one of the five mayors invited to offer testimony and answer the Senators’ questions.
Prior to his appearance, Mayor Wheeler tweeted that leaders like him are on the “frontlines of the climate crisis” and, “on the frontlines of climate action.”
Folks: This is not Portland, but for those of you planning to visit Bellingham, here is a nice bicycle ride through some hidden little gems of parks and beaches that can be quite secluded and peaceful!
If you’re like me you’ve accumulated a mountain of assorted bags and packs after years of cycling: I’ve got different bags for commuting and grocery runs, bikecamping adventures, working remotely, shooting photos, race weekends — and then there’s all the swag I’ve collected from industry events and conferences. The list goes on!
Now there’s something productive I can do with bags I don’t need anymore.
Portland-based North St. Bags has partnered with Schoolhouse Supplies for a donation drive that will benefit low-income students as they prep for the school year. North St. Bags is a Portland business success story and their panniers have become nearly ubiquitous in local bikeways. Schoolhouse Supplies is a nonprofit that supports public school students by giving them free pencils, pens, notebooks, bags, and other things they need to learn.

To help reach more kids, North St. Bags will host bag donation drives on two weekends — July 19th through 21st and August 2nd through 4th — at their headquarters on the corner of Southeast Hawthorne and Poplar (1551 SE Poplar Ave). Just show up and drop off your gently-used (leave the badly stained and strained ones at home) bags, backpacks and panniers and North St. will box them up and take them to Schoolhouse Supplies.
Besides being a prime opportunity to give back to the community, the bag drive is also a great chance to pick up a new bag at a discounted price: Each person who donates a backpack or bag will receive a coupon for 15% off any North St. Bag, valid through the end of August. North St. Bags will also donate 10% of all online and in-store sales between July 19th and August 2nd to Schoolhouse Supplies.

On Monday evening a bicycle rider sustained injuries in a collision with a driver on Northeast Tillamook Street. According to photos sent to us by a reader who saw the aftermath, the collision happened at the northeast corner of Tillamook where it intersects with North Williams Avenue.
