Funding cut is opportunity for activism

From a community fund drive to a rally at City Hall, there has been a wide range of reactions to the Mayor’s decision to cut funding for Portland’s Bicycle Master Plan.

On top of the list is tomorrow’s Bicycle Master Plan ride. This ride, which meets across the street from City Hall, will be led by city bike coordinator Roger Geller.

The ride is slated to explore North Portland, but given the events of the past week I wouldn’t be surprised if it made a few loops down SW 4th Ave. (in front of City Hall).

Concerns, questions raised by Mayor’s decision

Portland’s current Bicycle Master Plan was last updated in 1995. It has served us well, but according to city planners and expert consultants, it is woefully inadequate and it no longer serves its purpose. Since it was completed, the number of bicyclists in Portland has skyrocketed and we have become a national model for livability.

We’re currently going through an important update process that was kick-started by $50,000 in city funding in 2006. The new Bicycle Master Plan will help guide Portland to a world-class transportation network that will provide citizens with safe, efficient, healthy, affordable and emissions-free transportation options for decades to come.

The Cities of Portland and Milwaukie, Metro, and local neighborhoods have announced plans to celebrate the completion of the Three Bridges on the Springwater Corridor Trail

The $5 million project, that created three new bicycle and pedestrian bridges connecting southeast Portland to Milwaukie, got its official dedication and ribbon-cutting last October. That event drew politicians and advocates including Portland Mayor Tom Potter, Milwaukie Mayor Jim Bernard, Metro councilor Rex Burkholder, and Congressman Earl Blumenauer.

Tranportation activist considers City Council run

The word on the street is that citizen activist, blogger and consummate Portland transportation insider Chris Smith is considering a run for Portland City Council.

Smith was recently profiled in the Portland Tribune in a front page story that called him, “Citizen Smith”.

A former transportation chair for the Northwest District Association, Smith is also Mr. Streetcar. He sits on both the Citizens Advisory Committee and the board of Portland Streetcar Inc.

Is he bike-friendly? Definitely.

Ira Ryan wins Trans-Iowa endurance race

Local framebuilder, and ex-bike messenger Ira Ryan covered 300+ miles of gravel roads in 25 hours to win the third annual Trans-Iowa Endurance Race.

Ira, who also won the inaugural edition of the event in 2005, beat out 120 other racers for the win.

According to live audio updates provided by ultra-endurance website Ride424.com, Ira soloed for the final 12 hours of the event and was only challenged 20 miles from the finish, when he pulled away from a Polish rider on one of the final climbs.
