The Oregonian’s inPortland secion has a nice story today that will give a big boost to Portland’s awareness of and interest in bakfietsen (Dutch for “box bikes”).
The story focuses on how great the bikes are for kids and families, and even mentions a woman who uses one as a way to lose her post-pregnancy pounds,
The Oregonian reports that the Portland Business Alliance has released their annual Downtown Business Census and Survey. The report focuses mostly on real estate and attitudes about downtown business issues, but it also includes a page titled, “How Downtown Employees Get to Work.”
The Ride of Silence drew hundreds of cyclists to the northeast Alberta neighborhood tonight.
We met at the Community Cycling Center where Alison Hill welcomed us to the ride and introduced Commissioner Sam Adams. Adams said it’s important for Portlanders to remember that the right-of-way is for all modes and that we must all work together to share the road.

Fixed-gear bikes are becoming more and more popular in Portland. They make great urban riding machines and are adored for their affordability, simplicity and durability. But for some local fixie lovers, they’re also just a lot of fun to ride.
Last Wednesday, 25 year-old Dustin Kent got on his bike after work and made his way home to Vancouver via the I-205 bridge bike path.
Senate Bill 729, which seeks to clarify the existing bicycle brake requirement so that fixed-gear bicycles don’t need an additional brake (as long as they meet the performance standard), got its first hearing on the House side of the capitol in Salem this morning.

Just got some great news from ODOT Government Liaison Shelli Romero. She says the City of Portland will receive a $75,000 Transportation Growth Management Grant to be put towards our Bicycle Master Plan update.
Hold on to your helmets folks, tomorrow is the start of three days of Bike to Work events.
It all kicks off with PDOT’s famous (and historical) Bike to Work Day Breakfast in Pioneer Courthouse Square. It’ll be a big party, with tons of fellow commuters, scrambled eggs, and oh so much more.
You can join a guided ride into downtown from various points around the city. In addition to PDOT’s official rides, BikePortland readers have offered to lead a few rides of their own. Read the updates to this story for more details.
