City budget hearings begin tonight: Take survey before you go

Tonight in Northwest Portland the City will hold its first of three Budget Hearings. To coincide with these hearings, the City has launched an online survey to find out how citizens feel about spending priorities.

With the recent passage of the 2030 Bike Plan, there has been a lot of headlines and discussion about transportation funding. These hearings are an excellent opportunity to tell Mayor Adams and City Council members what their priorities should be.

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– With the Olympics ending, the Vancouver mayor is hoping to keep some of the magic going—including the transportation measures that boosted foot and bike traffic, created a streetcar, and reduced downtown car traffic by thirty percent.

– A round of major federal transportation infrastructure grants were awarded nationwide, with rail (including freight) and mass transit being the primary focus.

– During the Toyota recall hearings, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood stated that lowering speed limits wouldn’t save lives; here’s the fact check.

Thieves hit Cascade Cycling bike shop in North Portland

Thieves broke into Cascade Cycling Friday night (2/26) and stole bicycles and parts.

Cascade owner Ben Bartlett got in touch with us about the news this afternoon. He said the thieves smashed a front window and took several “precious rides.”

Portland man accused of attempted murder in Hwy 101 collision

The Daily Astorian reports today that a Portland man is being accused of attempted murder for intentionally driving his truck into a man who was riding his bicycle on Highway 101 just south of Seaside back in November.

Stephan Joseph Fox, 23, was arraigned Thursday in Clatsop County Circuit Court on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault and felony hit and run in connection with the incident, which severely injured Seaside chiropractor Seth A. Goldstein.

City helps with left turns by taking a “two-stage” approach

When you’re riding a bicycle, making a left turn across several lanes isn’t the easiest thing to do, especially for less-confident riders. To help make the maneuver a bit more pleasant, it’s sometimes helpful to do what traffic engineers refer to as a “two-stage left turn” (it’s also referred to as a “Copenhagen Left” or “box turn.”)

Markings and infrastructure for two such left turn movements have recently popped up in Portland.

New company produces high-end wheels in Portland

Made in Portland.

Portland’s bike industry now includes a high-end carbon wheel builder. Corsa Concepts announced the official launch of their company today and founders Mark Duff and Greg Hudson say they offer a full line of carbon wheels (including a full carbon disc) designed for road, track, time trial, triathlon and cyclocross.

Duff is the man behind Veloforma, a company he started in January 2007 that designs and sells carbon framesets. Hudson met Duff as a racer on the Portland State Cycling team and the two are now partners in this new venture.

Forest Park bike access talks disrupted by illegal trail

Commissioner Nick Fish’s promise to improve and expand access for bicycles in Forest Park might be harder to keep than he expected.

With emotions still raw over the construction of an unauthorized trail in a sensitive habitat area of the park, tonight’s meeting of the Forest Park Single Track Cycling Committee was expected to be heated and emotional. It did not disappoint. There were pleas from Portland Parks Director Zari Santner, a walkout due to anger by two bike advocates, diatribes against the illegal trail, calls (from both sides of the debate) to shut the process down and reconvene the committee, and new information that has vast implications for the future of single track riding in the park.
