Even after the large-scale, volunteer search effort in the Riddle area was downsized yesterday (not “called off” like I initially reported), the search for Mark Bosworth continues.

It’s now been six days since Mark was last seen at a Cycle Oregon campsite in Riddle. The big development yesterday was the offer of a $10,000 reward for information leading to his discovery.

More about the reward and the latest on the search below…

It’s that time of year again… Beware of sun glare

morning, shows the impact of sun glare.

Last year about this time I shared a friendly warning about the perils of sun glare. It just so happens that the sun rises and sets about the same time as the peak AM and PM commutes when lots of people are on the roads. When the sun is at just the right angle, it’s very difficult to see and glare causes many collisions each year — like the one that seriously injured 76-year-old Clark Henry a few weeks ago.

Yesterday I was reminded about this hazard from reader Craig H. Craig shared the story of his friend who was hit on Tuesday morning at 7:30 am while bicycling eastbound (into the sun) on N. Lombard:

At their meeting in John Day this morning the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Commission voted unanimously to to designate three new State Scenic Bikeway routes. That brings the total to four and the new routes join the existing Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway.

The three new routes are the Blue Mountain Century, the Old West Bikeway and the Three Sisters Bikeway. Each route comes with a marketing plan and the full support from city officials who see them as a way to attract bicycle tourists and spur economic growth.

With no significant leads and no trace of Mark Bosworth in five days of searching rural Douglas County, officials have shifted gears away from the large-scale, volunteer search effort.

“The volunteers have been asked to go home,” shared volunteer Mickey Deagle a few minutes ago, “At this point, there’s only a need for a fraction of the manpower.”

At its peak, the search effort included well over 120 people — 80 of whom were citizen volunteers that had come from Portland and other areas throughout the state.

Oregon Manifest: Insights and teasers from local constructors

Jonathan Reed of Quixote Cycles
is confident in his entry and
can’t wait to see what others
have created.

If you’re not excited about the Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Design Challenge yet, I have no other choice than to seriously question your love of bicycles.

Some of the most accomplished bicycle minds in the country have been working for months under shrouds of secrecy in their underground lairs to design and create the “Ultimate utility bike.” What exactly does that mean? That’s the fun part — How each individual builder and team defines that term will be one of the most fascinating things to watch for when the bikes are revealed Friday.

Will the entries include cargo bikes? Will anyone bring a folding bike? Will e-assist make an appearance? How will classic porteur-style bikes hold up against more innovative entries? Will one form of utility bike steal the show?
