Well, you can’t say I didn’t warn you. The Oregonian’s strange, anti-bike editorial last week, seems to have laid the groundwork for Sunday’s front page story that unfairly and inaccurately blames bikes for PBOT’s budget problems.
As you can see from the front page image, under massive font that reads, “Portland’s Roads to Ruin” is the sub-headline, “What’s a priority? Bike routes, conferences, and staff. What’s not? Repaving and cleaning your crumbling roads.”

– Business is booming at Zen Bicycle Fabrication, Portland’s newest frame manufacturer.
– In another sign of bicycling’s economy growth, Full Speed Ahead has announced it will bring construction of its high-end carbon fiber Vision wheels to the Seattle area.

I sometimes get annoyed with Internet memes, but there’s a new one that I’ve had a lot of fun following. In the lead up to tomorrow’s pre-NAHBS Show Me Yours event, local bike lover Chris DiStefano is encouraging folks to share their handmade bikes on Twitter with the hashtag, #showmeyourbike.
In just a few days (thanks in part to DiStefano’s employer, Rapha) there have been nearly 500 submissions on Twitter and Instagram. Tomorrow morning, DiStefano will host an offline meet-up where everyone is encouraged to show off their handmade bikes. The event will start at 9:00 am at West End Bikes (SW Stark and 11th). “These beautiful bicycles aren’t precious collectibles,” says DiStefano, “they’re made to be ridden.”
Back in August, former NFL quarterback and star at University of Oregon, Joey Harrington, was riding his bike on SE Foster Road when someone driving a car struck him from behind. It was the hardest hit of Harrington’s life. Now his charitable foundation wants to channel the attention from that collision into an annual ride that raises money for “childrens’ bicycle safety.”

“Last summer Joey was hit by a car while riding his bike on the streets of Portland. The foundation would like to channel the attention from this accident to educate our community to the hazards associated with bicycle travel with the aim of reducing and preventing injuries to children.”

Earlier this month we brought you news of a bike theft from Seven Corners Cycles in southeast Portland. A thief had made off with a Surly Long Haul trucker by removing the window pane near the front door, lifting the window out, and then riding away on the bike. Now we’re happy to report that the bike has been recovered and the thief has been arrested.
