Profile: Nicholas Caleb, lonely voice for better biking in race for council

City Council Candidate Nicholas Caleb hands out signs in support of a citywide minimum wage hike in a demonstration on 82nd Avenue last month.

The best way to understand the only vocally pro-bike candidate in tomorrow’s city elections might actually be to watch him drive a car.

“I drive at 20 mph, 25 mph inside the city at all times,” Nicholas Caleb said in an interview this month. “I just don’t think it’s safe. And I don’t care if people are beeping at me.”

As a campaign that calls, on every one of its signs, for a $15 minimum wage — volunteers favor the green and white version when they’re campaigning downtown, red when they’re in East Portland — the 30-year-old Concordia College adjunct professor’s two-month sprint of a city council race has certainly drawn a lot of beeps.

Bike ride will raise funds for Oregon State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial

Commemorative ride jersey.

When backers of the Oregon State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial decided to have a bike ride to raise funds for the project, they knew just the person they needed call: Ken Chichester.

Chichester retired from the Oregon State Police in 1995 and he’s known to many people for his nightly speeches during the annual Cycle Oregon ride. Chichester has worked with Cycle Oregon for the past 23 years and he’s responsible for route development, ride safety, and permitting. His nightly addresses usually begin with a joke that is so eagerly anticipated that people in the crowd yell “Joke! Joke!” before he even has a chance to speak.

But now Chichester is working on a ride with a much more serious mission. The OSP Fallen Trooper Memorial Bike Ride will happen on August 2nd, the day after the memorial — which has been years in the making — is dedicated on the Capitol Mall in Salem. The memorial is a basalt stone sculpture that weighs about 60 tons and will be engraved with the names of State Troopers who have lost their lives while serving our state.

The Monday Roundup: The cost of zigzags, Swedish secrets and more

A detour on Indy’s downtown trail.
(Photo: Curtis Ailes)

Here are the bike links from around the world that caught our eyes this week:

Commercial appeal: Much of the beautiful Indianapolis Cultural Trail has started to hum with new developments, but one section of the first-rate bike network hasn’t: Massachusetts Avenue, where planners decided to zigzag the trail to preserve some on-street parking.

Assuming error: Instead of emphasizing education, the Swedish philosophy of street safety “assumes human imperfection at every turn” and asks engineers to mitigate it with design, writes the NYT in a report from the world capital of safe streets: Stockholm.

The upside of uncertainty: One of Sweden’s tricks is to design low-visibility streets that have more minor crashes but fewer serious ones.

Baldwin as salmon: Semi-professional flipout artist Alec Baldwin called New York City “a mismanaged carnival of stupidity that is desperate for revenue and anxious to criminalize behavior once thought benign” after being cited for riding his bike the wrong way on Fifth Avenue.
