If you live in Clackamas County, there are lots of spots open on their Pedestrian/Bikeway Advisory Committee… See the official notice below:

Three-year volunteers needed for Clackamas County Pedestrian/Bikeway Advisory Committee
What’s on your mind?

Clackamas County is seeking up to seven volunteers to serve for three-year terms on the Pedestrian/Bikeway Advisory Committee. The committee advises the county on policies, regulation and ordinances that affect pedestrian and bicycle facilities in Clackamas County.

The committee’s mission is to promote and encourage safe bicycling and walking as a significant means of transportation in Clackamas County. Its goals include:
• the development of a coordinated system of safe and convenient bikeways and walkways,
• financing options for bicycle and pedestrian projects, and
• increased public awareness of bicycle and pedestrian issues.

The committee’s accomplishments include developing the Clackamas County Bike It! map, a recently-implemented Bike Sign Plan for urban Clackamas County and a Bike Sign Plan for a portion of the rural county that is expected to be implemented by the end of 2013.

The Pedestrian/Bikeway Advisory Committee meets on the first Tuesday of every other month from 6:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Development Services Building in Oregon City.

Individuals interested in serving on this committee are asked to complete an application form and submit it no later than Thursday, Aug. 22. Applications may be completed and submitted online through the county’s website athttp://www.clackamas.us/miscapp/application.jsp or by contacting Clackamas County Public and Government Affairs at 503-742-4353.

View from a Williams Avenue resident: “A weary pedestrian”

From a livable streets perspective, Williams Avenue has a lot of problems. Its outdated bicycle lane is so inadequate that the City of Portland prioritized it for an upgrade a few years ago. That upgrade won’t happen until next year, and thankfully, that’s not the only thing that will be be changed. The North Williams Traffic Operations and Safety Project will also come with many other design changes that should make it nicer to walk and bike on the street.

In the meantime, a longtime BikePortland reader who frequently walks on Williams says the way many people ride on the street has made him a “weary, weary pedestrian.” He wrote us via email to share his perspective and I’ve pasted it below:

I have lived off of Williams (N of Skidmore) for over 10 years and fully embrace anyone riding a bike on Williams or anywhere for that matter. I’m a huge bike fan and love nothing more than admiring a great vintage bike or beautiful lugwork on a frame.

Unfortunately my love of bikes is slowly diminishing due to more than a handful of cyclists who choose to ignore traffic signs and markers. I can be found walking my dog, or by myself, at all hours, and find myself more and more astounded by the behavior of folks who fly through stop signs, lights, around corners and most especially through very visible pedestrian crossing areas all over Williams.

Welcome to our new legal column with Ray Thomas. Ray has been a legal resource for Portlanders (and beyond) for many years and we’ve used him as a source on countless stories. Now we plan to give him a greater presence on BikePortland. Disclaimer: Ray’s law firm Swanson Thomas Coon & Newton, is a BikePortland advertiser. As always, I welcome your feedback either in the comments or directly via email. Thanks for reading. — Jonathan

What can you do if someone harasses you while you are riding your bike? The first and best advice is to not do anything that gets you hurt, remember what you can in order to identify the perpetrators later, and call law enforcement.

The Monday Roundup: Is bad driving inevitable? and more

Jail time may not make a difference.

Here’s the bike news and views that caught our eyes this week:

Does punishing bad drivers even work? “We cannot address fundamental human failings by changing the law or proposing more punishment for failure while the underlying task that we are asking drivers to perform remains so difficult. … The way to address the problem of putting human beings in charge of any dangerous activity is to limit how often they have the opportunity to make catastrophic errors.” That’s David Hembrow in a post highlighted (and disputed) by commenter Paul in the ‘couve on Friday.

What’s with people who drive BMWs? Slate’s Department of Complaints offers up four theories on “Why BMW Drivers Are Jerks to Cyclists.”

iPods while biking: A person riding a bike playing music or podcasts over headphones can hear more ambient noise than a person in a car with the radio off, according to RideOn magazine. (Not that that’s a high standard.)
