Non-profit to publish guide, website for ‘Open Streets initiatives’
The Alliance for Biking and Walking will publish a print guide and website to “increase success with Open Streets initiatives.” This is great news for anyone that has experienced the impact of Sunday Parkways or similar events throughout the country. Read the press release below…
New Alliance Partnership to Advance Open Streets Movement
Washington, DC – June 22, 2011 – Open Streets initiatives have exploded in popularity across North America, encouraging millions of citizens to experience and celebrate their public spaces in ways they’ve never imagined. To advance this growing movement, the Alliance for Biking & Walking and the Street Plans Collaborative are launching the Open Streets Project this summer.
Open Streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobiles, allowing residents to walk, bike, skate, dance and utilize the roadways in countless creative and active ways. From Los Angeles to New York to Miami, Open Streets have become an effective and high-energy means to build community, promote active transportation and reconnect neighborhoods divided by traffic.
PBOT installs new signs to warn of Steel Bridge path closures
The Portland Bureau of Transportation has installed new signs to warn people when the lower deck of the Steel Bridge is closed. The signs, placed on North Interstate Avenue and near the bike-only signal above the Esplanade, are due to become operational next week.
The signs are cautionary orange, have flashing beacons on either side, include the bike and walk symbol and have the words, “Steel Bridge lower deck path closed when lights flash.”
Here’s how PBOT spokesman Dan Anderson explains how they’ll work:
“The signs will flash whenever the gates are closed on the lower deck path, no matter what the reason. They will flash when the lower deck is lifted for river traffic as well as when there is a closure for maintenance, or if there are any further malfunctions of the gates.”

CRC update: Faith from Metro, $178 million for parking garages, and more

Love it or hate it, the Columbia River Crossing project is marching forward. Fast (in mega-project terms). Below is a run-down of recent developments and news tidbits…
Metro’s Leap of Faith
On June 9th, Metro voted 5-1 in favor of a CRC resolution (Councilor Carl Hosticka was the lone no vote). The vote was a nod to CRC project staff and state DOTs from Oregon and Washington that they had “addressed satisfactorily” a list of 11 issues with the current plan initially raised by Metro back in 2008.
